battery inside of the computer

I have a friend who took the lithium battery out of his computer and left it that way. What will this do to the computer? How does it affect the computer when the message comes up that it needs replacing?

That is the cmos batery. it keeps the date, time and other things working. Technically it will work without it, but there is no point to remove it unless it needs to be replaced. And I have never seen one that needed to be replaced. I'm sure somebody will chime in with some more info soon.

x2, i thought the one in my computer was bad because i had to keep resetting the cmos to get it to start up, replaced it and that wasnt it, never seen one go bad either. even on old ass computers.
