Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

I own a 2000 chevy s10 ZR2 with about 124,000 on it. Whenever I turn very hard, or hit a hard bump I hear a clunking noise. I have jacked it up and jerked both tires back and forth and there is no play so I don't believe it to be a ball joint. I tried my best to check the cv shafts and found no play. It honestly feels like it is coming from the torsion bar crossmember. I replaced the two bar link assemblies on the crossmember and it seemed to help for about an hour and then started doing it again. Any suggestions!

thanks,
steve

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

Not sure if it's the same problem I had, or not, but here's what happened to me. When I turned the wheel all the way and drove (like making a tight turn) I got a cluncking sound and felt a slight "shift" in the truck (like something had dropped). After playing hell trying to find what it was, I took it to the dealer and had them look at it. It turned out to be a bushing. I sold that truck, and got my 02, and guess what same thing. Since it was still under warranty, I took it to the dealer, and had the bushing replaced, and haven't had the problem since.

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

Mine just started doing this today. I'm bagged with drop spindles, and i am 100% sure it has nothing to do with the bag. I've been bagged for a year with no problems/strange noises. How long can i drive like this before I get it fixed? I work full time and it is hard to make time to fix it.

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

I have noticed it is not doing it now since it is so cold, it does it more when it is warmer out, so i'm thinking it is a bushing too. Maybe a body bushing, the front left right under the drivers floorpan to be exact. Has anyone else heard of this. Every once in a while when I hit a bump I feel like a tin can effect with my foot on the floor.

I cant feel mine really, i just hear it, but yeah it sorta sounds like a tin can or a knock of some sort. I asked a mechanic here at work and he said it is most likely a bushing. He said if he remembers correctly there is one that has a little rubber peice around it and it prob deteriorated or got knocked out of place it is causing the metal bush to bump another peice and make that noise

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

I have a 4x4 and mine does the same thing. The noise sounds like it is coming from the pasenger side steering components.

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

I think I have the same problem. It's kind of a clunking crunching noise. Actually it sounds like if you take a piece of rubber and try sliding it against something dry, so it's probably a bushing. It's only from the passengers side and only seems to happen when I'm turning or stopping really slowly. I'm going to check it out when I put my new drop parts on in a few days.

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

Most of you should be looking at the idler arm. It is on the passanger side [duh... except for you oddballs with right-hand-drive Xtremes] and especially prone to wear on the ZR2s. This is because (a) we ZR2 owners beat the hell out of our trucks and (b) as far as I can tell, it is the same idler arm as a regular 4x4. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if it is the same part [FA1114] as EVERY S/T 10/15 out there from 1994 up, though I will check tonight when I go to work. Anyway, has anybody ever tried McQuay Norris Extreme suspension components? And if I can't match up the arm tonight, does anybody here know for a fact whether the ZR2s use the same arm? Any other suggestions for some heavy-duty steering components for a stock suspension?

Re: Weird clunking noise when turning and hitting bumps

Old thread but ill chime in...Had this problem a while ago. 02 with 4.3 the passenger side control arm bushing couldnt take the heat i suppose from the manifold. Literally made it fall apart and the cross shaft was clunking around during turns. New bushings on all arms, problem solved
