The best way to clean up the frame

The 91 ex cab 2wd, that i purchaced a while ago is my next V8 swap project. I started to do some poking around with the truck to see what all needed to be done to clean her up. I removed the bed to do some work on it, when i noticed that the frame seemed a little to rusty for my taste, and kinda gave up on it for awile. But to day i had the notion to poke around some more, and much to my shagrin, the rust turned out to be just some kind of undercoating. I started to scrape along the surfice of the frame in different places, and the undercoating started to come off. Some of it had to be perswaited, but none the less i believe i'll tare the whole truck down to clean the frame up, and do some work on the floor of the cab. My ? is, should i have the thing blasted, or would something like POR15 be good enough.

If you're gonna do it, don't halfass it. Get it blasted, or clean it yourself. Don't just cover it up.

Re: The best way to clean up the frame

Yeah i tried that approach, with some bed liner spray. But it started to chip off in different places, which is why i decided to poke around with the frame. Once i realised that the frame was in much better shape than i had thought, i got pumped and went to town on it. The only problem with getting it blasted is, i have to haul the frame to the shop. I did a frame with POR15 a few yrs ago, which seemed to work out ok but it did'nt have all the crap on it like the frame i have now. I think blasting is around $100 to a buck 50, whare POR15 is about 1/2 that.

my undercoating is starting to chip off here and there, mostly up front by the wheel wells.

also if you have a pressure washer you can blast that stuff off with that. I plan to do that someday and get the frame repainted but thats a long time from now.

Get a wire brush and some brake cleaner. It should come off easily with that combo--just a little more work than a blaster would be. Even if you get it all off, use the POR15 anyway, it's good stuff.
