steering wheel bounces when hitting bumps

Just like the title says. What causes the steering wheel to bounce when hitting bumps in the road? Is it due to worn out parts in the suspension? Can anyone give some info?

i would guess its more steering related than suspension... is it the wheel itself? wiggle the wheel and see if its loose, if its the column there should be two big nuts on the bottom you could tighten or some bolts on the firewall.

Re: steering wheel bounces when hitting bumps

The steering is nice and tight. It's just when I'm going down the road and hit a bump or going across kinda rough railroad tracks. The steering wheel gets a bump or a jolt in it.

Re: steering wheel bounces when hitting bumps

You need to check everything up front.

Steering shake when hitting a bump can be worn ball joints, tie rod ends, loose control arm bushings, very loose wheel bearings, very loose idler arm, bad shocks, bad tires, bad wheel balance.

A guess, I'd go with shocks, tires or wheel balance.

There is a clamp under the dash too, check those bolts.

Re: steering wheel bounces when hitting bumps

get new, good shocks if everything else is tight. the steering wheels connected to the wheels and if they're bouncing around all over the place so will the steering wheel.
