Power steering problem

I just bought bd'd truck off here and the guy said he had just replaced the power steering pump the week before I bought it and that it wouldnt stop squeekin. He put on a new one a few days before I got it, and on the way home the power steering went out. Finally got it home to the garage and fluid was leakin every where out of the pump. I changed the ps pump and had to do a few more things and I started it yesterday and turned the wheels for awhile, it was all lookin good. Its still up on jack stands so I havnt drove it, but I started it to fill the tanks and the pump started smokin so I turned it off. Nothings leakin yet but can the steering box go bad and cause restriction on these pumps or what? I cant go through a ps pump every day? Any help is appreciated.
