Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

will this work with headers?

what we need is a mustang 2 rack conversion kit that keeps the same geometry of the steering shaft so the headers will still work.

headers willl work , rear the install instructions , they are way helpful

ps instructions are at the bottom and takes you to a pdf with pics of a s10 with a small block and headers, read it , its impressive , the only thing i could not get was a belt number

I am not saying its a bad idea, I agree with you on that. Like deeze said, we need a mustang 2 rack kit.

$1100, manual rack, 18:1 ratio, no weight savings, I can't think of a reason anyone would want this.

I'd like to get rid of that sloppy recirculating ball box, but not for $1100!

Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

That bracket doesnt look very complicated, and if you had some fab skills I bet it could be made. Id get a power rack and try to set it up myself. I am not saying it would be easy becouse I am sure it would need to be straight and square, but it could be done. Do they sell just the steering shaft?

Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

a longer jeep shaft will work, thats the least of my worries. i need tie rod ends that will be close to the same taper, im thinking the ones they use on silverados might be close.

Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

Get a Lee performance 670 box and call it a day.

^ you have to click suspension then scrool down. It's the ATS 670 box.

I thought that all tapered studs of the same size were the same taper. Kinda industry standard, like thread sizes.

Do you have this box? I'd want a report from somebody who owns this first.

Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

No I'm not (yet).
It seems to be the big thing for all the pro touring guys. The box is lighter then stock, 12:1 ratio and is smaller.
http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/sho...&highlight=lee

BTW, AGR has a pretty bad rep with most of the PT guys.

Thanks, now for a dumb question: Is this 670 box a direct bolt-in?

Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

MEH..... its still a steering box, which means more pitman and idler arm replacements in the future. imagine a gm truck you never have to put another idler arm on..... EVER!

i like that idea better.

Re: Has anyone seen the rack and pinion unit

I was Googling for rack and pinion steering and I found this article in Hot Rod Mag. Although they concentrated on an early Mustang conversion, the prices quoted should give you some idea of what the market is for these conversions. Looks like about $1500 is the going price for a power R&P, so Unisteer is not far off at $1149 for a manual unit. A rack alone costs $250 at Jeg's.

And then I found this article in Rod & Custom Mag.

Oh well, I think that I will just replace my sagging idler arm.
