trans oil cooler
My son has a 2002 xtreme 2.2 liter. He says it is whining and has no reverse, very little oil on the dipstick. filled w/fluid and not any better. does this truck have a trans cooler or not. He is about 200 miles away so I can't look and see. I need to know whether to bring a tool box or a tow truck!

Re: trans oil cooler
thanks, i thought maybe it had blown a line and dumped the fluid, but he said while he was driving it, it made a loud popping sound so he pulled over and checked things out. then it wouldn't go into reverse.

Re: trans oil cooler
it has a tranny cooler built into the pass side of the radiator. as far as a external cooler like the full size have, NO.
if it has lots of miles i bet you need a trans. the 2.2 are notorius for burning up trans due to they have no power and the trans is constantly shifting. PM deese49686, he can help with all your tranny needs and questions. sounds like something internal let go, sunshell or clutch drum. |

Re: trans oil cooler
a friend of mine owns a tranny shop and we got the truck to him over the weekend. diagnosis is the the sunshell. 72k on the clock. The truck has never towed anything or even hauled anything, I owned it for the first 40k. does gm know how to build a trans anymore? In the past few years this is the list of people close to me; 93 trans am, 97 firebird, 94 camaro, 01 grand am, 99 grand prix, now 02 s-10. Some of these were complete failures, others were slipping to the point of rebuilds. I drive a 07 f150, the wife 07 mazda 6. anyone wonder why?

Re: trans oil cooler
In all realty 70-80K isn't to bad for a 4L60. Ive been seeing um come into the shop about 80-120k. You would think by now GM could make them last longer.

Re: trans oil cooler
I work for an LTL trucking company and we do quite a bit of business with GM, we picked up transmissions from Saturn today and tuesday I picked up an allison automatic from a duramax pickup. These go back to Michigan because they are still under warranty. I think GM makes some great looking cars and trucks, and they get better mileage than the Fords. But I'm sorry, they don't have reliability mastered yet.

Re: trans oil cooler
i call it job security. if gm made vehicles that do not break than lots of people would be out of a job.
i go 240k out of a 4l60e trans. the first gear clutch pack had no notches on the outside. normal wear, nothing else was damaged. everything else looked perfect. i have 150k on my 94 orig trans/eng and my 01 gmc got 156k before the trans died the 01 had no service. i serv the 94 every 50k |

Re: trans oil cooler
I know you say job security with tounge in cheek, but if you really think about it that is the opposite of job security. Why keep buying something that routinely breaks when so many other companies products are not breaking? The rack and pinion is gone in my sisters malibu at 65K. I traded in a 2004 colorado for my f150 for fear the valves were going to drop out of it.
