battery HELP

how come my batteries are dying so fast?...they are a year or two old...maybe they have seen their life?....sometimes they dont charge to 100% either...i hit like 8 switches they are already starting to die? shouldn't i be able to hop with 24 volts...also was woundering why solinoids are ran in series not parrellel?...batteries have 600 cold cranking amps, 750 marine cranking amps?....HELP

Re: battery HELP

There's no way you're going to hop on 24v...unless maybe it's a Ford Festiva without an engine.

What setting is your charger on when you charge the batteries? You should charge them overnight @ 2 amps for a nice full charge.

as for the solenoids....In series, if two of them open and one sticks closed, the two that are open will kill power to the motor. In parallel, you would lose the safety feature of having multiple solenoids able to open the circuit to the motor in the event of a solenoid sticking.

Re: battery HELP

you should charge your batteries at 2 amps. unhook the battery cables on your batteries and charge them 1 at a time for a maximum charge.as for the lift, the more volts you have the faster its going to be.i ran 6 batteries @72 amps on my s-10 and 1 hit of the switch my truck was off the ground.it also depends on the # pumphead you are using in your hydraulic set up. i had #9 in my hi-low set up

Re: battery HELP

I see a few things wrong. The noids should be mounted on the rack or have some way to know that there is a good ground to there. The spot I see them on doesnt work too good. The pumps looks to be mounted on a painted surface , even the mounting bolts could not have good ground cause the paint. The batteries you have take longer to charge than group 31 's. Too your batteries maybe just old. You say your running the system on 24v? But in the pic you have 4. So you just using 2? Your gear also has something to do with it , if its too large of a gear it need more voltage to move because of the amount of oil it trying to move. Another thing your oil has to be as thin as possable, if its too cold out and you have heavy oil , it will be to thick to move too.

Re: battery HELP

Re: battery HELP

That setup looks a bit hokie. I would definitely clean it up some, make sure there is rubber underneath the batteries, also make sure that the solenoids are mounted on bare metal for a good ground. The pumps are also self grounding, so they will need to be mounted on an unpainted surface. Once you do that, spend some bread on a street charger. Then you will no longer need to charge your batteries, and they should last a lot longer.

Re: battery HELP

im not into tha street charges heard alot of bad things about them such as they dont charge batteries to the fullliest and will kill batt. even faster....then they are expensive as hell....id rather just thro them on a charger over night.....whut do u mean by "HOOKIE?".....i plan to relocate everything under the bed for corrosion purposes....

Why dont you use all 4 batts? The settup will work with 2 but 3or 4 is best at the least. Again what gear size you have? For low volts you should use A small gear like a street or china gear.

Hokie, as in solenoids mounted to the front of the bed, two random batteries not hooked up, rusted piece of box tubing holding the batteries-just generally not clean setup. As far as the street charger goes-not true

I would get new ones, and run it on 3 and 1 to the truck like you have now.

Re: battery HELP

1) 2 amp charge, 3-5 hours a battery should fully charge them.
2) Yeah, get 4 new batts if these ones are toast.
3) Lately its been a lil cooler at nights, your system is going to be quite a bit slower than it would be if it was +20 out. YOu can still run your hydro's during the winter if you really wanted to, I did. Just make sure your batteries are always fully charged.

4) Is that daves old setup?

Re: battery HELP

Well, I didn't say it was a good idea, just said you could. LOL

If you leave your truck at a good height, use a good oil, you should be able to do it. Dont hit your switches to much, they WILL be as slow as hell. As for seals, they're really easy to change on the cylinders, never taken apart a pump enough to change one, but I couldn't imagine them being to hard to either.

Either way, i'm sure you'll encounter a leak or 4, it comes with the territory.

IMO I wouldn't drive it in the winter, coming out to a BD'd truck on the ground isn't worth it, especially when you can throw in some springs without the cylinders in there and drive on those.
