welding test.

Post subject: welding test
i just found a place that is looking for welders, and they said that they administer a weld test before they hire anyone and i was wondering what exactly that entails? any other welders care to chime in on this? he said it should take like 30min to complete if that helps. thanks.

Re: welding test.

Usually they have you perform a weld similiar to the type of welds you will be doing for the company. It could be something as simple as a MIG weld in the flat, or something as complicated as a 6G pipe weld. When it's finished, for a lot of entry level positions, they'll just do a visual inspection of it. If it's a higher up job, they may send it out for destructive or non-destructive testing.

Take your welding gear with you. They should let you practice on a piece of scrap to set up the machine to your liking. You usually only get one go at it, so take your time. Also, for an entry level position, it doesn't have to be perfect, so don't get stressed if you make some mistakes. If it's bad, you still might get the job, just at a lower pay rate. After your welding improves, they'll bump you up to where you should be.

Re: welding test.

i took a welding test today for stick which i have only done maybe 5 times im a certified mig welder but not in stick the guy helped me out and showed me some stuff and kinda helped me to pass i had to weld a T-joint up hill with the stick dont remeber the size of the rod i used tho

but to help you out, ask the person giving you the test for any input this can show them intress and you wanting to do a good job and ask them if they can wastch you make a pass to make sure your doing it right thats what i did to day and i think i got the job even tho im not a stick welder

Re: welding test.

i took the test monday, did very well, the tester said i had amazing form and a very steady hand, but i messed up a lil bit on the stop/start where i had to fill the crater but he said it wasnt a big deal. i ended up not getting the job i went in for because they are doing 95% military stuff where the welds need to be %100 perfect %100 of the time and my lack of production welding experience, which i can understand completely. i did however get a general labor job making great money and the possibility to work myself up in the company. so overall it was a great day.

side note. when i did the weld test i noticed some other welds previous ppl had done before me on the table. they were scary to say the least, just all over the place, to slow, to fast, and not even touching both pieces all on the same weld. it made me chuckle inside just thinking they even tried for the job.

Re: welding test.

that sucks, guess this is a mig?? if so on starts/stops when you stop then your going to restart make sure your a half inch infront of where you stoped then pull all the way back to the crater then make your bead then move forward.

im still waitin on the call back for the job i tried for. funny thing is im not a stick welder ive messed around with it a few times and now how just dont have it down yet and there was 2 guys there they said they was stick welders and couldnt do anything
