Welding Cast to Steel

Any tips or suggestions on welding cast to steel? What I will be welding is the cast center section of my rearend to the steel axle tubes. I will be using a stick welder also... What type of stick , setting , ...etc should I use? Also what kind of prep should I do? I've read/been advised that using a torch to heat the cast up first will help with the weld...Thanks for any help...

right on. pre heat and post heat it. (heat with torches before and after) so it doesnt crack when it cools. you could prob use a 7018. thats what i always use, in 3/32s. prob run it about 90-100 amps

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

Should I start on the cast and pull it toward the steel? Or the other way around? Also is it a good idea to run say a 1" bead then go around 180* and weld another 1" bead thus offsetting shrinkage? I'm going to run a few practice welds of course then try it on my actual rearend....

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

It looks like something similar to the top right one: The cast section had a small/slight beveled edge on it...

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

oh, i forgot where you were welding. may want to run a hotter root pass, grind it down, then run another pass around it.
it shouldnt be holding much stress, because stock ones are just plug welded in i believe.

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

Yes they are press fit in then plug welded...I'm just doing this for added strength/security ..... How would you recommend the root pass to be made? Then after the root pass stick to 90-100 with a fillet type weld?

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

Id TIG it with Inconel Filler around 175 amps.. or 308L stainless wire but thats me im not a fan of stick welding.

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

im not sure if you could use a 6010 or 6013 for a root. i dont remember exactly what rod to use on cast.

and yea, your normal fillet weld would work.

I don't need to TIG it I think...Plus I don't have a TIG..haha....I could possibly take it somewhere to be MIG welded but I'd like to give it a try myself...

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

you want to use a nickel rod. a 7018 MAY work, But there are better rods for the application. its also not a bad idea to peen the welds pretty good. you may want to preheat depending on how thick the area you are welding to is. Aside from that, Use normal prep. Grind the area, make sure its clean of any oil or corrosion. and run short overlapping stringer beads with a nickel rod. You may need to peen the welds to reduce stress during the cooling process to prevent cracking.

Some others have also advised me of using a Nickel Rod...I did plan on peening the welds to help prevent cracking...

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

yea you use a peening hammer and knock the weld while its cooling. It releves stress on the surface that causes cracking. There are several rods out there that can be used. Ni-rods seem to be the most popular. there are also certanium rods which i have heard people good results with. I believe thats a #889 rod. I have also heard of people using the mig process with straight carbon dioxide as a sheilding gas on cast.

I actually just tried welding some cast to steel a couple days ago, and it didnt fare too well for me. I didnt have any nickel rod, So i tried to tig it with standard mild steel filler, The welds laid down decent looking from the outside. But When i pressure tested the joint, They were actually full of porosity, and they didnt hold any pressure. so i ground it all back down, and am starting fresh. Having the iron parts i had made out of steel at a machine shop.

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

It turned out pretty decent...I'm going to grind it a lil to make everything more uniform....Thanks for all the input and help......

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

You must consult a qualified welder. Asking this kind of question on a news group is asking for big problems. And this means you need somebody who knows the job and will stand by the results.

Re: Welding Cast to Steel

Done and done....haha...Welds look good and I'm pretty sure the ring and pinion will snap before the welds do...I did it just to help out with axle tube deflection....
