Tubing bender

So im in the market for a tubing bender. I want something to bend 1 inch to 3 inch but if not 3 inch at least 2 1/2 od, and most will be 1/4 wall. Id like a hyd. bender but i dont think I can afford one at this moment. Can i bend tubing with a manual bender? Please steer me in the right direction to purchase one. Im really not familiar with good brands on this such equipment. Ive looked around at Grizzly tools and MSC and such. My price limit is around 200 to 400 with dies. Thanks for any help

Re: Tubing bender

you wont find anything worth wasting your money on for 200-400 with dies.. you can get one of the ebay ones. But there technically pipe benders, not tube benders. So you wont get the best results..

Best bang for your buck is one of the units from jd2.com. Or you can make one yourself. But either way id have a budget of at least $600 set aside all said and done.

Re: Tubing bender

I might add that this bender will not bend 1/4" wall tubing unless you use a 8' cheater pipe and they are not made for this. Sorry,,but I had one of those one time and sold it. It does a good job on .095 wall but with a set of 1 3/4 dies it was still hard to bend.

Re: Tubing bender

my buddy bends 1/4 wall DOM tubing with his jd2 all day. he converted it to hydraulic with an air over hydraulic Ram from harbor freight. for all of $75. If it can be done with a hydraulic ram, there is no reason you can do it by hand. Its just not going to be easy.

Re: Tubing bender

jw why you would want to bend 1/4 wall tubing? 3/16 is already pretty beefy as is.

I was wondering that too but since this thread is a couple months old I figured the OP wasn't going to come back and post in it.

Re: Tubing bender

I also have a JD2 model 3 bender, and made a hydraulic conversion kit for it. I bend 1.25"x.250 wall DOM on it daily for a few years now. its never let me down, and ive bent alot of 180 degree hoops with that tube also.

Great bender for the money, and converting it to hydraulic is easy.

Re: Tubing bender

The compact bender is not for bending tubing. its for rod and flat stock. it doest not have tubing dyes. If you try to bend tubing with it, it will crush the tubing.

The tubing roller is ok. I have one... it is not a tube "bender". It is for large radius bends. Not for small radius bends like the ones mentioned above. But The dyes are cast, so they arent very good. and the hardware is junk. The screws that keep the drive die in place losen up, Then the die starts slipping in the middle of a bend. Also you kind of have to weld the wheel to the shaft, because the screws that hold the wheel in place work themselves loose. For the price you cant beat it, But it does have its downfalls, as does pretty much everything from harbor freight. I did manage to roll a piece of 1 5/8" tubing with a 3/16 wall, But it took me about an hour to roll it out to the curve i wanted. Smaller shit like 1"od 1/8 wall is pretty quick tho.

Re: Tubing bender

good choice. the 1.5 is a good die to start with since 1.5 can be used alot. i had the JD2 with that same die and loved it. out of stupidity i sold the setup for $75 when i stopped doin tube work..now that i need one again i cant afford it lmao.
