extension cord on a welder??
Ok, heres the deal. I have a Miller 135 welder. Its 115v (110 outlet) and I just got done putting in a seperate outlet in my garage just for the welder. I went by the Instruction book that came with the welder, and put it on its own 20 amp breaker, and used the 14/2 wiring like the manual said (it said use 14/2 if it was 50 feet or less, or 12/2 if it was 50-200 feet......and I only needed 38 feet from breaker box to outlet)
Heres the problem....... The truck is in the garage all tore apart getting bags installed. There was no where in the garage to put the outlet that would allow me to reach all the parts of the truck in which I need to weld. So I wondered if I used a heavy duty extension cord (equal to the power cord on the welder or bigger) would this still be ok?? Like I said, there was no where in the garage I could put the outlet to easily reach all 4 corners of the truck, and I need to weld on both front sides, and the rear. I will have to use an extension cord for the welder but just wanted to make sure there are no problems with this. |

Re: extension cord on a welder??
i have the lincoln 135...i have to use an extension cord to run it outside to do my welding...it welds fine...if i ever do a really long bead, sometimes it will pop the breaker that outlet is running off of in the house, but all i do is just reset it...thats only when i do long beads tho...anything else it works fine

Re: extension cord on a welder??
Yah i've got a lincon migpack thats 115v, and i use an extension all the time, just make sure its a heavy one, (10 guage i think) if your goin very far because there will be a voltage drop that will hurt your machine. Plus you'll make crappy welds. I dont like to go more than one extension cord because you lose alot in the plug.
