Do you back off your oxy/acet regulators?

I'd like your opinion on this matter. I recently got chewed out at work by one of my foremans for damaging one of the oxy regulators. I always back off the regulators at the end of each use to relieve the diaphrams. He argued that it causing the inner seat to stick to the housing when it bottoms out. So when the next person uses them tries to readjust them, it tears the seat. I told him I've never heard of that and I've always bled and backed off the regulators on my home set and never had a problem. Anyway he said not to back them off completely from now on. Has any of you had this experience where the seal or seat got damage from backing off the regulators? I tried looking for the users manual but couldn't find them. I'll try contacting Victor Welding and send them an email. Thanks for any inputs

Re: Do you back off your oxy/acet regulators?

i just shut the tanks off. I keep the regulators set to where i want them. And i will clear the lines by opening up the valves on the torch, And wait until the gauge drops to 0.

only thing your really doing is wasting time. And Probably aggravating the next person in line. I know if it were me and i had to reset regulators every time i wanted to cut something.. I'd be raising my voice about it.

I always back them off and recommend the same. Yes you have to reset them, but as you mentioned the likelihood of blowing the diaphragm is greater if you don't.

Re: Do you back off your oxy/acet regulators?

ive worked with guys who have been doing this shit since the 60s. we used only top quality equipment in our shop.. None of them ever would back off regulators.. we would just close the tank, and empty the lines. And we never had issues with regulators going bad..

Re: Do you back off your oxy/acet regulators?

yes you should always back off the regulator. i also work with people that never back it off and we havn't had any problems but there is always a chance of having problems. you can easily damage the diaphram and there is a possibility that the adjusting screw could back out and shoot out and potentially harm someone.

Re: Do you back off your oxy/acet regulators?

I know my torch setup at work is easily 15 years old and I just close the tank and empty the lines. My father uses the same torch setup and never even empties the lines. No issues.
