Re: So I finally started...

that's what I set out to do! I forgot to snap a photo with the speaker sitting in it, but that's really not that important. I think I may have got it now. I don't know if I want to just paint it black, or black and blue, that decision will be made later. Next week, it's the other panel! WOO HOO (not) lol

Re: So I finally started...

I will be covering the upper portion in a black suede I think. It will match my seats when all is said and done since they will be black leather, with black suede inserts!

Re: So I finally started...

Small update: Tomorrow I am getting some more suede, and i will be covering the upper portion. Also, I have Jon (dbornotdb/ Epicenter Designs) making me a couple things for the door, those things will be kept secret until I have them. I found out what I will be painting the door with, I should have it COMPLETELY done, within the next couple weeks.

EDIT: Opinion wanted. Black suede black paint? Or Like a dark grey suede with black paint? I am thinking maybe some more contrast would be nice, but I am not quite sure...

Re: So I finally started...

Does anybody know if you put another coat of primer on after the guide coat? Won't it cover weird if there are two different color primers under the base coat?

Re: So I finally started...

You can use a sealer coat, usually a thinner primer. but in school to save money we used a base coat that was the proper shade (Dupont measured in a "Valu shade" The Valushade for my indigo blue is 7, its a decently dark charcoal grey. Thats also what I used to spray factory cherry red metallic. Black covers well tho, a couple coats of black will cover most anything. Its the lighter colors (reds, yellows, even greens and in between) that you need to worry about color changes and transparencies with coverage. BTW i was the only asshat in OT without the orange shirt on, I had my charcoal dickies OT shirt on with the huge logo on the back.

Re: So I finally started...

I think I know which one you were. Weren't you checking vehicles in the line there? I don't know if you know who Joe is, but I was standing next to the "rat rods" over there for a good 10 minutes talking to Joe lol. Problem I am finding right now, I didn't do a damn guide coat, i put another damn layer of primer and had to sand it ALL off haha. I am thinking maybe Ill just throw another coat of primer, and then paint the black and blue. I'll figure something out.

Re: So I finally started...

Why would ou have to sand it all off? just guide coat all of that and then sand it. Technically you should have only put one on and guided from there to keep thickness down since its over plastic, but that only REALLY matters on dashboards since theyre soft. You will be fine. And yes, I was passing out windshield ID cards and aruging with ppl that had fully done cars that wanted to be in "mild" lmao

Re: So I finally started...

If I get mine done next year, i want to be in the mild class, since it won't be that custom...... I didn't HAVE to sand it all off, but i already did lol. It's like smooth as glass. So should I put another coat of primer or just call it a day? There are small amounts of black primer on it still, like where the sanding lines were, it filled them like it's supposed too... I guess I could just put another coat and call it a day, like you said, it's the hard plastic so it doesnt really matter how thick it is... (as long as it's within reason lol.

Re: So I finally started...

Well whats on there now? You dont need primer to totally fill the lines, Clearcoat will fill as deep as 400grit sand scratches

Re: So I finally started...

right now there is two layers of filler primer, and then spots on top of that (because I sanded the other shit off) of a darker primer... The black will cover, it's the blue I am concerned about, so I figured, if I am going to hit that part again, why not just hit the whole thing...? If you cannot tell, i am pretty much.. LOST... when it comes to this painting shit lol.

Kenny I am coming over tonight to get my phone, Ill take a look at what you have to do still, by the sound of it, I would just hit it with a sealer primer and then paint,

Re: So I finally started...

ok Derek! Just make sure you call me, I should be here but no guarantees. As much as I dread sanding now, I sanded all that damn dark paint off, and put another coat of primer on there. Couple little imperfections will be fixed, and we'll try this again! lol

oh and btw, I think I have officially found my paint.

hmmmm candy blue over silver base. I am in love lol

Re: So I finally started...

Alright, I didn't work much on the panel yesterday, because my MacBook decided to take a shit on me, spent all day trying to fix it. I called up Apple this morning and they are going to fix it for me, I only had 20 days left on my warranty too! *WHEW* I just block sanded the panel with 400, it's nice and smooooooth. This panel is done until I get paint.

Re: So I finally started...

Ok, my updates are boring I know! Today, I prepped the other panel, cut the circle, made the baffle for the speaker. Everything went VERY smooth today. I also found out that if you want to cut the panels in your interior, and are using a jigsaw... USE A WOOD BLADE. When I did this the first time, I used a metal cutting blade because it's what was in the saw, and I figured the finer teether would help out a little. NOT. The metal blade, just melts the plastic and it reforms, wood blade, kicks ass and takes names. Tomorrow I will lay the maxim, and a first layer of everglass. You can see the gorilla sploot (glue) in the photos, Ill file that off there, and get to work! Shit, if I am lucky, this one will be done by this weekend, if not, it'll be done money. Got my new headers, and oh boy, what a relief they were, not the pretties things right now, but after I get a collector welded on, and get them jetcoated, they will be very nice. They cause ZERO issues with the steering shaft, and will be a piece of cake to shape the firewall around them. Here's a few photos because we all LOVE photos . Later!

Nice progress! Every little bit helps.
Too bad that you couldn't keep the old headers, they were sweet! Oh well, less headaches with the new ones though.
