Re: So I finally started...
Also, in response to your breather question. I am 100% new to the small block stuff, well, carbed small block, my LS1 was slightly different . My father has a breather mounted on his firewall of his 65 Cutlass (he has the same STYLE valve cover) just have to drill and tap it and either put a breather, or a threaded fitting that allows you to add a hose to a breather. So, I dont know for certain whether it HAS to have it, but mine will have on. |

Re: So I finally started...
Just be sure to get the best gaskets you can afford. I have breathers on both sides and I still get oil leaking from the covers. Hopefully that'll be fixed this week.

I hear you Doug, although I am trying to keep this budget friendly, this will be one area, where I spare no cost as far as quality goes, I cannot have motor problems, as I won't know how to fix them! lol

Re: So I finally started...
So for some god awful reason, my motor is not centered when we bolt it into the mounts
. Dad says I should buy another set of mounts, but what's to say that those are going to be any better? This is fricken ridiculous to say the least. I miss my Trans Am more and more with every passing day lol. It's off centered probably a good inch or two towards the passenger side, I just don't get it. |

Re: So I finally started...
My engine isn't quite that far off but it has to be slightly off center to get the headers to clear correctly. Keep in mind, the mounts have slots. You can adjust from side to side if you have to.

I know man, we pushed it as far as we could over to the one side. I went golfing to ease the stress level, and i guess my dad figured something out, so when I get home, we'll see...

Re: So I finally started...
NO i was at the ladies house when I put that one up. The problem has been solved. Now, just need the bars (Taylor shipped them today) depending on how early the pick up was, they'll be here tomorrow. Probably won't see them until Monday. My dad's union called a strike, so maybe he'll still be home on monday so we can put the body on there

Re: So I finally started...
Wow. Union family eh? I was doing some work down in AL a couple years ago. Non-union plants building parts for Mercedes. It was A LOT different than doing work up here.
Hopefully the links will get there tomorrow. I'm doing the same thing. just HOPING I'll get all my led's in the mail tomorrow. If not, I'm waiting till Monday too. Last edited by Mystic_Knight : 04-18-2008 at 11:43 PM. |

Re: So I finally started...
I think it just depends on who you work for. My dad hasn't been laid off every 6 months thats for damn sure. He got laid off for a couple months a couple years ago due to the making of a new factory, and they closed his old one, before that, it was probably damn near 20 years lol. I am a temporary employee, so TECHNICALLY, I am fired, not laid off. I say laid off to keep the hope they will call back haha. At this point in time there is no saying what they are going to do, especially with Michigans grade A economy. Oh well....

Re: So I finally started...
I work with the tooling and robotics for the assembly lines.
I could go on about this subject for hours. In short, I see the union lines have happier employees and the quality of the work they do is usually great because everyone has their own job and that's all they'll do. Both my grandpas were union guys for most of their life. It got them some great worry free retirements. The non-union lines are usually more efficient, I can bring my own tools in and do my own work without having a union guy babysitting me. If all you're doing is loading a part to a tool all day you're not going to be paid $25/hour when you start that job. If you're slowing the line down your boss will call you out instead of kicking someone out that accuses someone of screwing the line up. The people that benefit from the unions are the union employees. Not the car companies, not the non-union guys that work in there. When union was the only way it wasn't a concern but now that there's tons of non-union options I think the union plants need to realize that they could be striking their way out of a job. There's plants a few states away that are paying people 1/2 to 3/4 as much as the ones in Detroit. And then there's Mexico, China and India. Those are the places that really need to start unions for the same reasons they were originally started here. I'm not against unions at all, I'm just against their power being abused. Re: So I finally started...
I agree in full with what you say Doug, its the "old-schoolers" that insist on bending the employer over as much as they can until they get in trouble, that's why people hate unions. I went to work, did what i needed to do with a good attitude, and all was well. If it wasn't so damn important for some people to break the rules to see if they can get away with it, there wouldn't be a problem. Oh well, back to the truck. I looked at it today in the garage, and I have some positive camber on my wheels when air up, normal. BUT, i also noticed that these control arms, would probably not work with stock wheels. The bottom of the control arm is basically resting on my wheel, i found that quite interesting. Good thing I wont be using anything smaller than a 20" wheel

Re: So I finally started...
Hm. Well I know those arms are made to lay on 22's so most people buying them won't be worried about rolling a 15 or 16. You say the bottom is resting on your wheel. Which wheel are you talking about? I've also heard about the positive camber. Is it only at full lift? If so, I'd think that's understandable. I think you may be able to adjust that a bit with some more shims up top.

I will go take some photos for you right now! And yes, its at full lift, front of the truck would look like a monster truck if I rode around this high lol. Be back in about 10.

Camber:
![]() Rubbing: ![]() The camber is not really an issue (I dont think) because its at full lift for the most part. The rubbing, also not an issue, since these wheels will never be on the truck while moving. For others however, it could pose a problem? |

Re: So I finally started...
that looks like a lot of positive camber. Did you put any shims on the arms? It doesn't really seems like a lot of lift either. If I remember right I think my upper arm is pretty close to the frame when fully lifted.

Re: So I finally started...
no shims yet, this is just sitting there. The lift statement was not true, especially now, its even lower than where I thought it was lol. But, you see the camber is still there. But shims should fix it.

Re: So I finally started...
Trust me, I know its depressing, i've been laid off for two months now. Imagine making all sorts of money and only having your account increase, and then watching it diminish slowly but surely lol. I put some more air in the front, i am pretty sure it maxed out now, considering my upper arm is about a half an inch from the frame, the camber isnt much worse, so with some shimming it should be a ok.

Re: So I finally started...
That is a lot of positive camber. Honestly though, when does anyone roll around at full lift though? I'll be interested to see how much can be corrected with shims. Do I see a Barely Legal notchless tie rod there? I love those things. Can't believe someone didn't think of them sooner. Now if they could just come up with a bolt in firewall to lay 22's with I'd be all set.
Do I also see a monster cart in the background that your body is on? You (and your dad) have way too many toys and tools.Last edited by Mystic_Knight : 04-19-2008 at 03:54 PM. |
