cutting Wiring harness

Can I cut off the plug in connections I don't need anymore. Such as I no longer have ABS, the a/c, heater unit. What im trying to do is tuck the harness under the dash with the main fuse box and computer in the glove box. I just want to trim down the harness of unneeded plugs. Of course i would tape the end of each wire or crimp a but connector on each end.

Re: cutting Wiring harness

well think about it, if unplugging it didnt cause a problem, then the plug being gone shouldnt either, i mean the truck doesnt know if the plug and wire is gone, just if what was at the end is gone

Re: cutting Wiring harness

i agree with the guy above...

but i don't trust it.. if you can leave them in there.. no harm. I know how much of a pain trying to get all the wiring behind the dash. but i'd rather leave them there if I could

Let us know how it turns out in what you do!

Re: cutting Wiring harness

Personally i would want to cut down as much as possible..beause if truck has a electrical problem and i have hundreds of wires under my dash that i dont need..i would probly hate myself for not cleaning them up

Re: cutting Wiring harness

best bet is a carb v8 swap with analog gauges, talk about very little wiring

but yeah rather than just cutting off the connectors, why not pull the wires for each connector and cut them super short from their origin. that way alot of unnecessary wires will be removed completely.

Re: cutting Wiring harness

I Was Told A Long Time Ago Not You Cut The Plugs Off, But I Don't See Why Pulling The Wires Out Of The Plug And Cutting Them Down Would Hurt Anything.

Re: cutting Wiring harness

I guess i'll risk it and cut the unneeded plugs. and trace the wires to cut them as short as i can at the origin. I'll update this thread if i run into any problems. won't know if there will be an electrical issue till later when the truck is close to "back together". I also don't see why it would hurt but i really don't trust it. we'll see.....

Re: cutting Wiring harness

install the harness then. pull the truck outside and let it idle while you trace down the wires.

the ones you wanna remove, just test them with a multimeter before you yank them.

u probably need to try the v8 section not the bodydrop section, but yes u would use the original harness for the v8 swap, there are a bunch of threads out there

Re: cutting Wiring harness

When you cut them just make sure the wires are not touching each other or any metal or anything like that if there is power going to them. Besides that cut away!

Re: cutting Wiring harness

dont be lazy.

trace the wires back, and remove them completely. dont just cut plugs off, you are asking for trouble!

i ripped my harness out of my 92, and completely removed about 1/3 of the harness that i didnt need. DRL and all that jazz. seriously about 2-3lbs of wire came off it hahaa! truck works fine!
