Make Your Own Avatar!

In light of various requests for avatars in this section, I thought this might help some new users to make their posts a bit more unique.

This is a step by step how-to for those who want a custom avatar and aren't sure how to resize or crop the image they want to use. If you use a Windows OS, I know you can do this.

For the demonstration I will use an image that Gil (10on20s) requested to be edited to avatar size.

Step one: Open your image in Paint.

Step two: Select the area to be the avatar by using the rectangular selection tool.

Step three: Once selected it can be moved to the upper left edge by clicking and dragging.

Step four: Now, click once in the space outside the rectangular selection. Move your mouse over the lower right corner of the palette and you should get a diagonal arrow that you can click and drag the bottom and right edges up to your selection, like shown.

Step five: Click File and Save to save your image somewhere that you will remember. Click File and Open and hover the mouse over the filename to see the details of the image (i.e. pixel dimensions as shown below) or you can right click and click Properties to see this info.

Step six: Determine the largest pixel dimension of your image and divide 100 by that number, and then multiply the answer by 100. This is the percent value that you will use shortly.

In this example, the higher value is the width of 555.

100 / 555 = .180

.180 * 100 = 18 %

Step seven: Open the file and select Image from the tool bar at the top, then select Stretch/Skew.

Step 8: Type in your percentage into the boxes as shown below. (This example is 18%, yours may vary)

Click OK ...

and finally, click File and Save to save your image.

There’s the end result that can be used as your avatar by going to User CP at the upper right corner of the forum page and clicking Edit Avatar.

If you goofed up and the avatar is the wrong size, the forum won’t let you load it.

Good luck and hope this helps.
