Winter Tires & Rims

I have a 2002 S10, had it since new. Decided I should get some winter tires, first time. Now I find that the rims are almost impossible to get due to some weird bolt configuration and that Chev stopped producing these after the S10. I've located one shop which was able to supply them at $160/rim for a steel rim.

What gives? What do you guys do?

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

chevy rwd lug pattern is very common! i got a whole set of stock s10 wheels for 80$ steel wheels with good tires, i got a set of camaro rims for 40$...

keep an eye on craigslist anything with a 5x4.75" bolt pattern from a rwd chevy will probably fit. i have had multiple sets of camaro and s10 wheels on my truck, this bolt pattern is very very common.

i went to a used tire place this winter and got 2 firestone winterforce tires for the rear, and 2 all seasons for the front and i was out the door 120$ mounted and balanced.

the deals are out there, dont take that deal.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

Is this a 4x4 or 2wd? Bolt pattern is very common, 4x4 offset is harder to find in a 15" rim. 93-02 Camaro/Firebird rims bolt on and the 16" wheels are easy to find. 2wd rims you should be able to find anywhere for cheap if you're looking at steel. Where the heck do you live and who told you they stopped making the bolt pattern after the S10s?

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

Get on your local craigslist and find a set of $50 camaro rims. The 2wd offset will just give you a wider track. Rattle can them black or silver or whatever color you like.

Then go to your local tire place and get you two good used mud/snow tires.

Its winter, no need to get fancy.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

I just found a set of 1st gen zq8 with tires for 200 bucks off craigslist. I dont like the look of them on my 2nd gen but they're gonna be on from now until march so who cares. I took the chrome 18s off and need to swap my chrome front bumper back to stock one just until spring.

check craigslist.org

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

prolly lives in salt land like me, chrome bumpers especially ones with the tiniest of rock chips LOVE to corrode in the winter.

hell when i had my 98 + front end on the chrome strip would get all hazy and get little green specs on it from oxidation/corrosion.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

What do you think about running the Firestone Winterforce on the front as well as the rear on a 2wd 2000 S10 for the winter? Non-studded. They are cheaper than any all season I can get so I'm thinking I might as well. I can get them for $53/piece cost for 215-70-15. Was just going to buy some cheap steelies or swirlies. NW Ohio isn't terrible but they're cheap so I may try it. Whats your take on the fronts?

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

All seasons are not cheaper through our supplier so I may try the Winterforces up front.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

Yes I have 17" MB Motorsport Vintages for non winter use. I think I'd rather try the Winterforce's up front than run a cheap cheap all season. We just put a set on my boss' 2wd F150 and they look like they'll do exceptionally well in the snow, especially when you consider the price.

yea i live in minnesota and they salt the shit out of the roads. i wouldnt bother with switching the bumper tho. keep it clean and polish the shit out of it in the spring it should be just fine. I know we run are wheels on are tahoe through the winter u keep um clean and just wax um onces a month and there good. The wheels have been through 3 winters and theres one flake just starting and american racings gonna give us a new wheel cuz there garrented.....

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

It's actually recommended to run 4 snow tires, not just two. I've run 4 on all my vehicles since I started using snow tires about 10 years ago. I have Winterforces I just put on my Blazer and have them for my wife's G8. I had them on my 4x4 Jimmy last year and 4x4 + 4 snow tires = unstoppable in the snow! Unless you end up in a ditch and bury it up to the headlights and the frame is sitting up on snow barely touching the ground.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

Cool, now I just need to find a set of 15s for under $100--- camaro wheels would look sweet in the snow.

Re: Winter Tires & Rims

You got lucky. They want a ton of money for crap in my area. I did see a deal on some 3rd gen 5 spokes with tires for $125. They claim tires were never driven on the road, the car was just parked on them.
