wheel barrings????

96 GMC Sonoma 4x4. 5speed. 4.3L (just so you know)

Anyone had these go bad. I haven't gotten to jack my truck up to shake the wheel yet, but when I took off down the road it howled like I had gigantic mud tires on. Does that sound about right to you guys?
I was told there should be no play in the 4x4s. If I jack it up and can move the wheel that means it's bad, right?

Is it dangerous to drive it like that? Could my procrastination on getting an alignment have caused premature failure? Anyone know where I can get 200 bones to purchase the parts I need?

Thanks for the help, sorry if this is in the wrong section. Didn't know where else to put it.

ps, I searched and found nothing, so please don't flame me.

Re: wheel barrings????

I bought an eBay wheel bearing for my gfs 2000 Jimmy for like $85 and it's been on a couple of years w/o any problems.

Her symptoms were the same, howling and odd noises, then hella play with the wheel in the air.

Its easy to replace, you just need an impact gun to work the gigantic axle nut off. All the other bolts (3 holding it on) come off easily with a 3/8 ratchet and some sockets. There's also other small things like brake calipers and rotors, but thats easy.

depending on the mileage and rust on your truck you might need to rent a puller to get the CV out of the spindle.

Re: wheel barrings????

I'm not sure if I'll need one since I just did the front axle half shafts in May. Anyone remember what size bolt the big hub bolt is? Isn't it like 30 something mm?

And thanks for the spell check, 2Lo
