what am I up against here?
Well this will be a descriptive post, as I'm in need of help in the worst way.
For roughly a month I've been hearing this squeak/clunk sound from the drivers rear on my truck. I didn't give it much thought as I was without access to a jack to even get the wheel off and look, well after a while the wheel started to get black and I'm not thinking this is a good thing. After driving it for a few more days the sound turned into more of a grinding and I mean NASTY sounding. So upon starting the truck one morning my foot goes to the floor and the brake light is on. I'm sitting here thinking oh f*ck.. We'll I get out and look, nothing is leaking and I can't for the life me figure out what the hell happened. It seemed as though I only had half my brake power when I applied the brake pedal. I drove it for a least two blocks and I go to stop and it's not stopping... I pushed it down as hard as I could and took some grass and through it back into park. Not exactly the greatest idea I'm sure but it was the most immediate way I could think to get it to stop. I heard some rapid clicking noises (transmission) and then a sudden stop as I finally caught and stopped me. I limped the truck back home at around 4-5 MPH and parked it. I waited a bit to let the truck cool down, I came out and started to work on the truck. What makes me think something is up is that both of my drums are painted to match the truck.. well all the paint was gone and what was left had some micro bubbles on it, I'm thinking it got hot and melted the paint off.. Well I pull the wheel and this is what I get: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I removed the drum and all these little springs and parts just fell out.. The rust/orange colored spot on the drum was where all the parts where apparently resting. Something is seriously wrong here.. I have no idea what happened. Anyone got any idea's. Also I have never changed rear drum brakes, just pads and rotors up front. |

"I have never changed rear drum brakes,......" (your words!)
This is quite obvious!! There is a thing called preventative maintenance. That means doing the necessary work BEFORE stuff breaks & possibly killing someone!! New shoes, drums brake cylinders & spring kit will fix it right up! |

Re: what am I up against here?
If the brake cylinder breaks will that cause a loss in brake fluid? Dumb question but I must ask it because I don't know it.

Re: what am I up against here?
and what did we learn from this??????
IF YOUR TRUCK IS MAKING ****ED UP NOISES..........SHITS ****ED UP, DON'T IGNORE IT!!!!! So, as said above, new rear cylinders, new shoes, new drums, a spring kit, at least one giant bottle of DOT 3 brake fluid, 8, 10, 12 and 13mm wrenches, about.....2 hours of your time if you've never done it before, and a friend to help bleed the brakes and you should be good to go......and a little common sense next time your truck is acting funny or making odd noises ![]() |

Re: what am I up against here?
hmm disk in the back isn't there a how-to or a thread roaming around about someone who did this with some after market calipers and brakets for a really good price.

Re: what am I up against here?
i think the easiest and cheapest way to do it is to go pick up a rear end from a 98+ blazer that come stock with disks and ust swap it in

Re: what am I up against here?
go to a shop! The drum setup on these trucks have very cheap parts, so if you go to an honest place that wont rip you off, itll be worth the peace of mind..... because if you dont have the proper tools, etc. you'll be in a hell of a mess.....

Re: what am I up against here?
I can do the front all day long, I've never even worked on drum brakes. So no I don't know what I'm doing. I gotta buy a manual. |

Re: what am I up against here?
why bother doing the drums? i purchased all my parts to do a disc swap for $200 with brand new pads and rotors... he would be putting the same amount of money into putting drums back into that truck... just not worth it

Re: what am I up against here?
I used 98+ Blazer/Jimmy/Bravada rear disc brake with G80. Direct swap(you may have to change u-joint flange. E-brake will not hook up(it didn't on my ext cab).
Other than that you're good to go if gearing is fine with no issues. Non ZR2 4wd axle = 2" wider per side ZR2 axle = 4" wider per side ALL ZR2 comes 3.73, and rest of Non-ZR2, 2wd comes 3.42. Took me an hour myself and then bleed brake with someone. |

Re: what am I up against here?
I would do the rear end swap if I could find a disk brake rear end here.
