Using old rims

So, I have a little problem. I got some junk yard rims for cheap that I'm going to throw winter tires on for temporary use. The problem is: the wheels are pitted pretty bad on the ends.

Question: How smooth do they have to get a good seal? Do they have to be perfect or could I get by with smacking most of it off with a hammer? Remember looks aren't important I just need something to put winter tires on.

Re: Using old rims

the tire place will hit them with a wire wheel and then use bead sealant if they have too.

I would be hitting the wheels with a hammer. You kind of want them to stay round.

Re: Using old rims

wire wheel's a good idea I might give that a shot. I'm just tapping it with the hammer lol I understand that giving it a good whack isn't the best idea.
