How exactly do you remove the brake rotor on a 99 4x4 S10, I don't have my service manual yet and need to have the rotor turned down. But I can't figure out how to get the rotor off.
Thanks
Remove your caliper mouting bolts, remove caliper. Don't let the caliper hang by the hose, wire it out of your way with a clothes hanger. 4wd. truck have disc that can be seperated from the hub. I would tap on the backside of the rotor to attempt to seperate it from the hub. If that doesn't work, remove the grease cap on the end of the hub, then the castle nut and cotter pin. Then pull the entire assembly off slowly, your wheel bearing will come out also.
Ok, thats how I thought it came off, but I wasn't sure, I don't see a grease cap anywhere, but I tried removing the castle nut and it doesn't have a cotter pin, that I can see, It still won't come loose and I don't want to hit too hard, is there any other idea anyone might have.
Also, behind the rotor, inside the dust cover, there a 3/8 allen nut that I can't break loose, but I don't know if I need to, there is a cable right next to it that runs to the abs system. Any idea what the allen nut is for?
Thanks
The grease cap is on the very end of the rotor hub. Remove the cap, under the cap is the end of your spindle. The end of the spindle should have threads on it.You should be able to see the cotter pin (looks like a hair pin). You have to bend the end up, to where the pin is completely straight. Then remove the pin, then the wavy cap washer. After that should be the castle nut. I believe that allen "nut" is actually the allen head bolt for removing the caliper.I am not sure about the ABS "cable". I will check my truck tomorrow.
I was excited to see the title, as I have the same issue...but I don't see any resolution here?
I'm assuming that by now you got them off?...And the cable you talk about, isn't that the parking brake? Feels like that's what mine are hung up on...I can rock them back and forth a little, but can't get them to come off the spindle...
Yeah, I got them off and felt stupid, since I had them completely unbolted and they wouldn't come off, they had sealed themselves on to the hub with rust. I used a puller, that pressed on the center bolt and pulled on the outside of the rotor. A couple of good turns and it made a big pop and the rotor came right off. Make sure to slightly screw a lug nut or two on, or you might drop the rotor. The cable I found out is the speedometer cable for the ABS? I believe thats what its called. Don't take it off or you will need a scanner to clean the system.
Hope this is some help.
My cable is the parking brake cable. There is one on each of the rear wheel assemblies. The cable has a rectangular hole in the end that slides over a "hook" that sticks out of the back plate of the wheel assembly at the bottom.
Were your rotors already loose? Mine move about 1/4 to 1/2" all the way around...just won't come off. They definitely feel like they're hung up on something inside. I can rock them back and forth, but the don't come off.
Not on my truck. There is no "lock washers"... the 4X4 has 4 wheel disc.
So here's what happened. The rotor's also serve as the parking brake on the 99 blazers. The inside of the rotor actually serves as the drum, and there's a horseshoe inside that has a brake pad on each end of the "shoe", with a little cylinder that pushes the two ends apart, which makes contact with the inside of the rotor. Once the Pbrake starts wearing, it wears a groove inside the rotor, and "hangs" when you try and pull the rotor off.
I put a small scissors jack I bought at a yard sale between the rotor and the little rubber body bumper mount on the top of the frame. Cranked the scissors jack so it had lots of pressure, and then started beating the heck out of the opposite side of the rotor, and it started to just barely slide. Kept cranking the jack...and pounding, and it finally came off, with the Pbrake "horseshoe" firmly lodged inside of the rotor.
