Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
Dug up and old thread, eh? Well yea the camaro rotors are bigger, but it makes it stop alot better. Also, for the wheel question I think you need to grind the caliper in some spots to fit a 15'' facotry s10 rim.

Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
Thanks for the response and respectful answer. What year camaro would be my best bet for my 2003? And should I snag the cables that hook up the e-brakes?

Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
I would suggest trying to find the newest fbody car possible even a v6 94' rear end would have disc brakes and those would be an improvement over stock rear drums. Yes, you should snag as much out of the donor car as possible... hell why not get the LT1 if your getting the lt1 rear brakes.

Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
02SonomaDanali, By LT1 your talking the whole rear end correct? The gearing will need to be checked also. This rear end will bolt up clean? I just need to make sure it's a 15 inch wheel. Thanks for the info to a chevy newbie.

Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
The rear end does not bolt up. And you must dissaemble the lt1 rear end to remove the brake backing plates. Then dissasemble the s10truck rear end to isntall the lt1 brake backing plates. If you go back to page 1 at top I believe there is a thread on here somewhere telling you how install the brakes onto your rear end. |

Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
Thats what I thought. i have not priced the individual parts yet at the wrecking yard. I wasn't sure which way would be less expensive. I have been reading and reading about this swap. I am mechanically and mentally confident that I can pull this off. It's a matter of when to get down there and "Getter done". Thanks for you help.

Re: rear disc brake conversion on 99 X
Bringing this thread back to life yet again!!!
Onyx, they really should have made your instructions a sticky!!! Now, first my general questions. And I have read every comment while looking at my haynes book right next to me. This makes alot of sence, and sure beats the heck out of some aftermarket "kit" that sells for $800. I confused, through out the thread, it's was stated that I would just have to find an Fbody, such as a camero that's the same year as my truck. (I've got an '88 S-10 extended cab.) And all I'd really need to do us pull the axle/backing plate out of the donor vehicle and swap that with the axle and drum mounting plate that's on my truck. Yet someone else said something about having to convert the entire rear end to '94 or later modle one. Which is it? I, like you at the time you originally did this, an newbie to rebuilding mechinical things. But you made is sound so simple, I'm willing to give it a shot. But there's a minor change I'd like to make though. As long as I'm going to have the rear end apart, I'm thinking along the lines of installing an anti lock up. Can you see any issues I may run into if I attempt to do that as well? Thanks, Jax |
