no rear brakes

in the process of bleeding the brakes i found that there is no fluid running to the rear brakes at all. while standing on the pedal and opening the bleeder valve on the wheel cylinder the pedal does not move. i know that when you loose pressure on one side of the combination valve a plunger blocks off the lines running to either the front or the rear depending, this also triggering the light in the dash. how do i get fluid to run to the rear. i heard you need a certain tool to pull something out of the valve and hold it out. what the way to do this?
