If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

So when i brake hard from slow motion (5mph) Reverse or foward. A clunk noise appears, it is pretty loud (hear it with my stero on loud). I recently bleeded my brakes which gave me a lot better braking response. But now I am discovering new noises from my truck. Besides that clunk noise, which also happens when i slam on my brakes when I am at high speed. (but you can only hear it when it is almost at the point of stopping). I also hear some squeeking noise from the back, maybe from the bed or the rear brakes?

I dont know. It stops fine now. I just want ot get rid of this unpleasant clunk noise.

Note: I didnt bleed the air out of the system for 2 years since I owned, now I realize how brakes should feel and work!

well, I always leave it on OD. I think I am gonna take the wheel off and check out the brake caliper.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

is it a grinding noise like every rotation of the tire and u can only here it around 15 mph and less when coming to a stop?

the same shti happens to mine ive been lookin for a solution forever but no luck

i know my balljoints are shot from ahving bags and my buddy said it could be that my balljoints suck so when the brakes are applied it lets the spindle move up and down but i am not sure

anyone able to shed some light on this?

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

did you change pads when you bled the brakes. If you did and did not squeeze the tabs on the outer shoe it will move around when you stop and make a noise.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

Update. I did grease all 11 fittings. But now it seems to be doing it again.

No, I did not change my pads when I bled my brakes. I just did it because I know there is air in the system (hard pedal). I could not take the caliper apart, because my c-clamp was not large enough. Also, that caliper bolt pin is freaking tight, didnt want to break anything before a long trip.

Get your Ball joints from summitracing.com. Tax free if A/P. And there are Moog. And I also just found that most of the suspension parts are moog, lol.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

Balljoints might make a noise on hard cornering or bumps/ potholes but I doubt that is your problem while braking. I still think your outer pads are moving, check the tabs to see if they are bent over tight agianst the caliper.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

tabs on the outer pads that are supposed to be squeezed up tight to the caliper . If they are not squeezed to the caliper they will move around causing a thump or clunk type of noise.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

can you feel it in the pedal? If so it sounds like the same noise mine makes and after a while of searching when I first got it I found out it was supposibly the ABS system. idk if that is true but when I tested it out I relised it only made those sounds when the abs system should kick in.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

well dont know if it will help but check the bushings in the control arms if they are shot (if you have air ride) they will usually prematurely wear out therefor making a clunk noise when braking from it moving back and forth

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

well just look at your upper control arm where the 2 bolts are on the end there should be a thick rubber bushing in there if not you need new ones can be found at autozone adavanced autoparts any place like that i think they are only 30 for the whole set

O man, my bushing is GONE then, it is smashed to almost like apiece of paper.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

um if you can take the top control arm off then just take the whole thing off the bubushings will come off then just slide the news ones in and my guess is that they should be atlast 1/4 to 1/2 an inch thick not positive on that but they are pretty thick

I KNOW this one !

I traced the problem to the pads and caliper bushings. Damn Autozone junk disc pads. Silicone spray to the caliper rubber bushings would quiet it, but just a bit.

I bit the bullet and went to CarQuest. New metallic pads, caliper pins, and rubber bushing kit.

I also picked up a tube of CRC Silicone grease for brakes (about $12). Cleaned everything well and applied the silicone grease where indicated in disc brake box instructions.

Took it out for a test drive today and the "clunk" and "thunk" are gone.

Re: If I Brake Hard, Clunk Noise appears

my truck does this same thing pretty bad. And ive decided its two things, one i had never heard of bending those tabs in on the brake pads until recently, and second check to make sure your rotor isnt warped, one of mine is and it just maginfies the entire situation. hope this helps people. But id say do the easy and free thing and bend those tabs down on the brake pads and see if it helps
