Yes it would work...... 2wd rearend are all 54.5" WMS and 4wd rears are 59" WMS.... So if his was 2wd and he swapped a 2wd rear NO PROBLEMS....and so on...etc...etc...

Look for one of these codes in your glovebox...it'll be on a sticker...

GU4=3.08
GU5=3.23
GU6=3.42
GT4=3.73
GT5=4.10
HC4=4.56

G80 - locking differential

compare to the codes in your glove box to know which gear ratio you have

I was able to find the proper ratio rearend at a local salvage yard. Does it matter what size ring gear it has if I plan to use the whole rear end? They only have a 7 5/8" but no 8 1/2".

PS awesome job on the how to here. If the price is right, I might just swap the rear, but if not, this page has been added to my subscriptions.

Ring gear size doesn't matter in a full axle swap. As long as it has the same ratio gears it should work.

If you swapped a 8.5 rear in and you didn't already have one ,then you would have to shorten the driveshaft 2" .Because the pinion yoke sits 2" further forward than the 7.5 rear....

So if I found a 4wd 98 Jimmy or Blazer rear end, could I use that on my 4wd 97 Jimmy if the gear ratio's are the same? Would I need to modify it or would it be a simple swap.?

Yea but wouldn't the proportioning valve have to be swapped out to disk/disk instead of the disk/drum?

Could you use/make a dust shield or whatever for the back of the rotor like factory disc vehicles come with, just so crap don't get in there, or is it really needed?

Found some info few years ago and it worked.The rear brake set up off any 10 bolt gm rear will swap to another 10 bot.I swapped rear brakes from a 95 camaro z28 that has the 7.5 10 bolt to a 69 camaro that had the 8.2 10 bolt.What makes this really nice is you get the backing plates and the mount from the donor rear end and installs and all looks factory.

curious to know, my company goes through alot of astro vans for our service vehicles. and i've notice alot of em have the disk brake rears? would that work out? also would some of them are AWD,(i know i should ask this in the drivetrain thread) but would the awd setup beable to be transplanted? cuz that would be bad ass.

No need to change master cylinders...The fronts wouldn't be a upgrade unless they are the dual piston fronts...

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

I am having the worst time trying to find the weld on brackets. All the from summit, jegs, and speedway say they are for a 11.75" rotor. Well the rotor for a 98+ blazer is 11.5 inches. Also my axle tube is not 3" in diameter; it is almost 3" , but its not. I have a 7.5 10 bolt rear end.

I guess the brackets will work with slightly smaller rotors?

This is what I want to get

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-Wel...kets,3348.html

But it looks nothing like the one in that is used in this how-to.

Can anyone clear this up?

Yeah. That is what I thought. Now that you have confirmed that, I think I am screwed. I bought all the stuff for the conversion, but the brackets are the last thing I need. I ordered some locally, but they were the wrong ones, so I decided to look at the online shops, but nobody has them for 2.75" axles. I hope I am just getting unlucky with my search. I really do not feel like taking off the axles on my new rear end rebuild to put on junk yard backing plates.

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

Just to follow up.

I bought those brackets. Well they did not really fit with my rear end/rotor combo. The caliper holes were exact, but the length of the bracket was not long enough to fit the rotor (off about 1/4 of an inch). I was expecting only the ends to have gap, but the entire bracket had to be raised 1/4 off the axle tube.

What I did was weld a 2.75 inch diameter half pipe piece that was 1/4 inch thick to the axle. I then welded the bracket to that. The best thing was to get the correct bracket, but to be honest, I really do not think there is a correct bracket. I have a stock rear end and used blazer 98+ rotors.

Anyways, the calipers are on and both sides seem strong and stable. Just thought I would share my experience.

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

^^^You should've just used stock blazer parts...Much easier swap...No welding required...Just space the stock bracket out from the axle tube flange about 1/8"-1/4" and plus you would have ebrake....

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

hey i may have dibs on a complete f-body rear diff with complete disc set up inner parking shoes and all. all of this should be a direct swap too right? When i disassemble everything then reassembly with the clips as above, then install the disc set up ya? will i need to sapce out the brackets as you do with the blazer 2wd? also this has a G80 carrier, is it worth a swap?

i just finished mine, this thread helped out alot. the only thing i would add is to replace the wheel bearings and seals. bearings are about $6 and the seals are about $4. advanced auto has a slide hammer with attachments to rent and it only took about 10 minutes since the axels are already out. it might really need to be done but its cheap and its already apart. just weld up the caliper brackets with the old bearings and seals in before you replace them.

So in Massachusetts, you can't get an inspection sticker if your ebrake can't hold your vehicle still with it in drive. Is this mod for off road use only? Or am I missing something?

It's old, but this shows other options instead of having to weld, if you don't have a welder...

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f14/re...51/index4.html

You can get even fancier, and buy this kit....

are the backing plats off the rear disc equiped blazers all the same weither they are 4wd or not?
I know that on my '02 2dr 2wd Blazer, the calipers are toward the rear of the vehicle and I picked up backing plates from a 4dr 4wd Jimmy and the calipers were toward the front. I think the location of the caliper has more to do with a 2dr vs 4dr frame than 2wd vs 4wd. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

nice idea and write up. yeah there are better ways of doing this but most minitruckers i know are all about pinching some pennies and thinking outside the box to do so.

for the brake lines you can either bend them around or cut them back if you have a means for reflaring the ends and then attach a set of hoses to them like the front has or if you are using the blazer setup just grab the line assembly with hoses from the donor vehicle.
