how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

heres what you need to get: 2 calipers for a s10 from autozone 10.00 each
2 rotors from the rear of a 98 up blazer 10.00 for the pair or you can get new ones from autozone for 45.00 each 2 weld on brackets from speedway 10.00 each for a 78-up gm.

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

for starters get the rearend out of the truck and take the cover off

next you want to use a 8mm socket to get the bolt out that holds the cross pin in the diff

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

after you get the bolt out be real carefull nut to stip the bolt use a 6 point socket on it.next you want to push the cross pin out

then take the pin out and set to the side

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

next you want to remove the drums off the rearend and push the axle in and remove the c clips be careful not to drop them into the diff they can be a little tricky to get out

after you get the c clips off you can remove the axles they just pull out

after you pull the axles you can remove the backing plate just 4 15mm bolts

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

then your going to want to clean up the rearend

then put the axles back in and start putting it back together put the axle gears in first

then put the c clips back in and give the axles a pull to set the c clips in place

then you want to put the cross shaft back in be carefull to line up the hole for the bolt to go in

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

everything is where it needs to be then so take so take the rotors and bolt the to the axles make sure to use 2 lugnuts at least

then take the caliper and bolt it to the bracket

then set it up on the axle tub where you want it

then just put a tack on it to hold it in place and measure it to make sure its the same front and rear

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

after you get it where you want it tack it in a few spots so it dont move on you then take the caliper and the rotor back off so it is not in the way when you weld it. when you weld it remember put a good weld on it they are you brakes you dont want them to fall off.

after you get it welded 100% put everything back together

spin it make sure everything is good and not rubbing and then bolt a wheel on to see what it looks like

all in all from start to finish it shound take about 3 hours to do this from taking the rearend out to bolting a wheel on it.

if you want to spend a little more money you can get cross drilled and powder coated rotor off ebay.

i hope i helped out.

very nice how-to.
only thing i would recommend is a correctly valved proportioning valve, because now that your piston sizes are the same front to rear, the bias will be quite off

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

Care to give any details on spacing the bracket so the caliper has enough room to slide? I assume you don't want it running out of space to slide before the piston is fully extended (low brake pad). And you obviously want to have it far enough down the tube that you can put the caliper on with a brand new set of pads.

Just thought it was something you didn't even mention. Not exactly just "set it up on the axle tub where you want it ".

Other than that, not bad. Nice little alternative to a bolt on set out of a blazer/F-body. Well, except the whole no e-brake thing... but for a race or show truck that doesn't need to pass inspection it could work.

if you use new pads it falls rite in place just got to watch it when you tack it so it dont move around on you

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

wilwood is a company that makes some REALLY nice brake setups... very expensive too.
Search it and you'll find a ton of info.

a cheaper alternative would be F-body brakes, but they won't exactly fill a 20. They fit in a 17 for sure, and hopefully in a 16.

they make them it just dont say s10 you have to get a set of rotors 5 x 4.75 they have them all the way up to 14.00 you can get a front set you have to use a set for a any g body gm or you can even change the spindles to the 2000 up and you can get a 4 piston kit and a rotor from a vette but that all gets a little pricey

Wilwoods are awsome!!! i have installed them on a bunch of cars and i think it worked about 1200lbs of pressure to each wheel! you pay the money but you get an amazing product for it! if you call them they are so helpful, and they know what they are talking about its not just some dumb a$$ reading out of a book.

It will move the wheels out. If the thickness of the rotor where it slides up against the hub is thicker than the drum. Which most are. But not by much.

Good write up. You can also use the entire rear brake setup off of a 98+ Blazer, you just need the parts and make a 1/4" spacer. That'd be another good cheap way to do it depending on your local junk yard prices. Hell I bought my entire 3.42 limited slip disc brake rear end for $200, but stuff where I live is super cheap.

So are all the 98+ Blazers / Jimmy's rear disc brake? This was my plan, to just get a complete rear end from 1.

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

nice write up, but you could just go to your local pick'n'pull yard, and take the caliper mounting plates off of an axle and then bolt them on to the trucks axle. no welding that way for alot of folks who dont have access to a welder. could probly pick up the rotors, calipers, and brakets, maybe in usuable shape as pulled, for under $50.

I have a 97 Jimmy that is 4wd and has rear brake drums. What would I do differently if I wanted to change my rear brake setup to rotors instead of drums? Or is it not possible for a 4wd? And if possible is the 4wd still functionable?

Just to add a bit to this article, you can get bolt on brackets from Scarebird.com but they're about $100. Also if you want to keep the ebrake, a set of rear calipers from a 79-85 Cadillac El Dorado will bolt up. You can get stock front rotors for a 4wd S10, and pads will be the same as a stock 2wd S10. You'll also need to make an adapter for the brake line since you can't run hard lines straight to the caliper.

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

what is the purpose of using a weld on aftermarket bracket with the 98-05 blazer rotor and an iron caliper when you can just use the backing plates and calipers from that same blazer and retain a functioning ebrake, with an aluminum caliper?

Re: how to put disc brakes on the rear for under 200 bucks step by step

the point of this tread was to show that if you didnt have a blazer rearend sitting around to get parts off of this is how you could do it by just buying some parts

Did you need to use a proportioning valve in the rear? I looked on speedway and couldnt find those brackets, do you got a part number? Did you use the stock booster/cylinder or did you switch them out? and how does the rear end feel when ur braking? thanks

a spacer for what? and where?

i have a 91 2wd blazer and i have the rear end out of a 98 4wd blazer with disks

so i just take the axels out and put the 98 backing plate on the 91 rear?

you will have to put a spacer between the axle housing end and the disc brake backing plate.

the reason is, the axle housing for a disk brake rear end is 1/4" wider per side than a drum brake rear end. so to make the calipers line up right with the rotor, a spacer is needed.
