brake pads.. rattling? wtf
my break pads seem to rattle and shake when i hit a bump, but when i hold the brakes going over bumps it doesn't do it, what could cause the pads to be loose? the old ones did that, and we put new ones on and they didn't do it for about a week and a half, and now do it again. soo. something loose or whut? Thx -Adam

if it is the pads....the front ones, if the pads have the metal tabs on the inside that slide into the piston sometimes those need to be bent out to make a tighter fit so they dont vibrate out, or maybe when they were put it one of the tabs got bent and it isnt holding it tight.

when you do a disc brake rebuild, there are certain parts that
should be replaced but usually aren't. first off, always measure the rotors and make sure they are within spec for thickness. also make sure both faces of a vented rotor are similar in thickness. under spec is dangerous, dissimilar thickness will usually warp and give you pedal pulsation. use a pinch-off tool that won't dam- age the brake hose, open the bleeder, and see if the piston will slide back into the caliper bore with just the pressure from your thumbs. if it dosn't, rebuild or replace them. check the slider pins, if they are corroded, replace them. they are plated, so you clean the rust off and it comes back and the calipers don't slide. most brakes have some device they call an anti-rattle clip. most likely what your problem is. your dad probably tried to save you a buck by reusing these, but the heat takes the temper out of them. they usually are just a piece of spring steel that keeps pressure on the pad while its suspended free. they have them in the brake hard- ware section of the wagner brake catalog. also, there is a spray product (aerosol can) from permatex that they call disc brake quiet that you spray on the back of the pad. it keeps the pad from chattering (disc brake sqeal). And a company called dynatex makes a product for lubing the slides that has moly and graphite in it, good stuff. and always resurface your rotors. |

Re: brake pads.. rattling? wtf
I just had a shop put all new pads and then they turned all the rotors. Ever since I got the truck back the LF is making a very loud smacking noise when ever I hit bumps. As soon as I put pressure on the pedal it goes away.
I brought it back to the shop and told them what was going on. They looked at it and said evcerything is tight. A few days go by and the noise is really driving me nuts. I brought it into the dealer to see if they could diagnose it. They spent about an hour on it and said they could not duplicate the issue. (Go figure) They told me to bring it back when it makes the noise. So on Tuesday, I brought it back into the dealership and a tech rode with me as the noise was very loud as I hit bumps. Mark (the tech) said it sounded like a "tinny" noise and was not surewhat it could be. The service advisor said that they would charge me more money for diagnosis until they found the problem. I even told them the exact noise and that it will go away when I ride the brakes down the road. Now, Tonight I went outside and looked at my calipers. It appears the brake shop never greased my slider pins and I also noticed that there is "play" within the pins. I can literally move the caliper around with everything tightned down. I'm so mad that the shop that originally did the brakes turns me away. And because of where I live and I can't even turn a wrench on my truck. ![]() |
