Re: brake caliper bracket bolt

Can you post up a list of everything you needed to swap to rear discs, and prices? I've got a spare rearend to work with, so I can take my time getting it all assembled before I swap it in. Is the junkyard or dealer the only place to get the backing plates?

Re: brake caliper bracket bolt

Ill do my best to list the things, people can add to it as they see fit.

I bought the rearend from a junkyard. It was 2001 2wd blazer rearend with 3:42 gears, 7.625", limited slip, with disk brakes - $250

I bought the brake calipers and brackets to mount them from www.rockauto.com. They were $89/ea because of the core charge. I did not have cores to turn in.

I bought the rotors and pads from autozone. I think it was like $135 total for both pairs

The rearend came with backing plates / flange to mount the caliper bracket to.

I had to buy 2 brake lines. 1 for each side that connected from the hardline on one side and to the caliper on the other - $30

I had to buy 2 banjo bolts - these connect the brake line to the caliper itself. - $8

I needed two 10mm x 35 bolts (grade 8) and USE LOCTITE!!! to mount the caliper bracket to the backing plate / flange - $5

I did NOT buy dust shields and I took the ones off that were on there.

2 qts of fluid go into the rear. cant remember off the top of my head why kind it takes, but it tells you in the manual.

I bought the chrome diff cover from summit. It was a Mr. Gasket brand - about $30 and came with a new gasket seal.

I had to put a different yoke on because my driveshaft connection was different. I had to buy a crush sleeve seal and I let a shop do it. My mechanic. took him like 5 minutes. If you overtighten it, you have to do it all over again.

Note: I removed the emergency brake like because im auto and lay it on the frame so it wont roll anywhere.

Some pictures from putting this bitch together:

bolts to mount the bracket to the backing plate - these are wrong though. they are not grade 8!

Wrong connection to hook up to my driveshaft:

my driveshaft connection:

one last one for good measure... hehe

NEVER cheap out or be lazy on ANY brake components.

brakes are the strongest system in any vehicle.

Re: brake caliper bracket bolt

So, your rearend already had the setup for disc brakes. Hm, I'm gonna have to do some serious searching to find those. Fvck a junkyard around here, they'll rape me.

Unless I can find someone with a toasted ring and pinion, etc..

well it's not that the bolt sheared off in broke... it actually backed out and loosened itself. It was the top bolt that mounted the caliper bracket to the actual backing plate. It needs some loctite on there. But I am going to buy 4 new bolts anyways and make sure they are all grade 8 just in case.

go on rockauto.com they have a nice system for searching parts. just type in 2001 blazer and look under brake/wheel hub parts. It should have backing plates on there.

edit: n/m they dont have them! damn!

Yeah, rockauto is awesome... I was searching under 2000 s-10, but still didn't see anything show up.

Re: brake caliper bracket bolt

not that i have found. as you can see from this thread, it was hard enough for me to even find the size. I had to call a couple dealerships and one of them was nice enough to give me the size!

Re: brake caliper bracket bolt

damn, so you say the yoke on the blazer rear wont connect with our s10 d/s? i am about to put mine in since i am swapping the t56/lt1 in my truck. I want to have all the parts needed. SO was it just the second gens or is it all the s10s taht need a different yoke connection?

Re: brake caliper bracket bolt

no idea... i think it varied from 94-97, and 98+, etc.
You will be able to use the one that is on your truck right now if you need to. just swap them. But I would have someone that knows what they are doing so they tighten it the proper amount. It's not a torque setting. It's like a "feel" to know when the crush sleeve seals in the yoke.
