All disc brakes?
I got an 01' S10 and I'm wanting to run disc brakes
in the rear. I was just wondering if I could steal them off a 4x4 s10 and slap them on the rear? Or any other ideas. |

Re: All disc brakes?
I believe the only real difference between the 2wd and 4wd rear brakes is the rotors. The calipers and brackets are the same that I have found, i would think the axle flange would be the same. I have all the parts off a 4wd blazer (calipers/ caliper brackets/ and the axle flanges) that I'm going to put on the rear of my 98 s10 here in a couple weeks when we install my locker. I'll let you know how the install goes and if i have to fab anything. I should take pics and do a write up this gets asked enough as it is.

For a 2wd, the simplest thing would be to swap in a Blazer setup with discs, wouldn't it?

Re: All disc brakes?
if your truck is 2x4 then make sure you get the setup off a 2x4...the 4x4 rotors are different...but YES a 2x4 disc setup off a blazer will bolt up to your truck....but you will need 1/4" spacers for the bracket because the disc brake rears are 48.5 from backing plate to backing plate...and the drum rears are 48" ....that's the reason for the 1/4" spacers on each side....

Re: All disc brakes?
If your truck is ext cab...then try to get the setup off a 4 door blazer.. so the e-brake cables will be long enough...if your's is a standard cab then just grab from a 2 door blazer.... you will have to adjust the e-brake cables to get them right....but if you know how to turn a wrench you'll figure it out...You'll have to take the cover off the differential to slide the axles out to get to the caliper bracket...and about the brake lines just take whole brake line off the axle housing and the clamps it'll make it easier......
here is a pic of the axle flange so that you'll know the exact measurements for those spacers to put between the flange and bracket.. Last edited by Petro : 02-24-2009 at 07:47 PM. |

Re: All disc brakes?
I swapped rearends on my truck. I have a 97' 2wd S10. I swapped it out for an 01' 2wd blazer. I swapped the whole rear because the gearing in my was 3:08 originally and the new one was 3:42's.
I had to change the yoke on the diff because my driveshaft was different on the u-joints so I used the one from my old rear on the new one. Had to buy a new crush sleeve for it as well and tighten it down to the proper torque setting. This is the important part, so pay attention: You factory ABS unit is programmed to send 10psi to the rear drum brakes and 2psi to the front disc brakes. You are going to need a proportioning valve to correct this. I took out my whole ABS unit because it got in the way of laying frame, but I added in a proportioning valve for disc/disc. You can get these from www.waylayedinc.com. If you don't put one of these in, you will wear down your rear brakes much faster than the front. I also sent out my ECU to be reprogrammed by Wait4mePerformanc.com. He was able to correct my speedometer for the new gearing, and different size wheels I was running. Also had him do a few other things for me like firmer shift points, remove top speed limiter, etc... Last edited by Kovz : 02-24-2009 at 08:04 PM. |

Re: All disc brakes?
You won't need a new proportioning valve...some trucks came with them some did not..Your rear brakes will not wear down faster than your fronts seeing as how rears only do about 30% of total braking...No need to worry about your abs unit..

Re: All disc brakes?
Petro, that's correct. Read through that thread. Lots of good info. I had them remove my ABS code (since I deleted ABS), remove the code for throwing a check engine light because I got rid of my cat, remove top speed limiter, remove 75% of torque management, and set my speedo for the new gears and different sized wheels. I should have more power AND save 2mpg.
I haven't had a chance to use mine yet though since the truck is away for winter. I look forward to writing my review soon, as everyone else has given excellent reviews! |

Re: All disc brakes?
Ok guys I have some more info on the swap.
I picked up some new two wheel drive rotors for the rear brake swap today. The parts I have are: Axle flanges off a 2 door 4wd blazer Rear Calipers and brackets off a 4 door 4wd blazer And 2wd rear rotors I mocked up the rotor and caliper on one side of my 95 s10. My 95 doesn't have a bed on it and it is in the garage so I figured why not try it out. I took the diff cover off, took the spiders out and slid the axle out of the tube. I then unbolted the backing plate and got the drum brake stuff out of my way. At first i tried bolting the flange that the caliper mounts to straight on the end of the axle. When I put the axle back in, put the rotor on, and tried to put the caliper on it wasn't happening. The caliper bracket was touching the out side of the brake rotor. I then took it back apart and used some 1/8th inch thick washers doubled up between the end of the axle flange and the axle. With it spaced 1/4 of an inch and reinstalled the caliper bracket was nearly rubbing the inside of the rotor, there was maybe 1/16th of an inch clearance. Lastly, I took it back apart and only spaced the flange 1/8th of an inch with a single washer on each bolt. This time with everything reinstalled the rotor was right where it should be between both sides of the caliper bracket, with plenty of clearance. SO from what I delt with on the 95 s10 drum rear axle, I found the best spacing for the flange that goes on the axle to be 1/8th of an inch. 1/4th of an inch would work also but the clearance would kinda tight on the inside of the rotor. I think I'll shoot some pics of it and do some sort or write up before I install the parts on my daily driver, which will hopefully be soon. |

You put the washers inbetween the axle flange and axle??? I don't get it... Or inbetween the axle flange and bracket??

Re: All disc brakes?
I put them between axle and the backing plate that the caliper bracket bolts to. Hopefully this clears up your question.
This thing, spacers went between this and axle...whats the real name of it anyway, backing plate? ![]() ![]() ![]() End result. ![]() |

Re: All disc brakes?
I'm going to cut out a one piece spacer out of some 1/8th inch sheet steel I have. The washers were only for measuring purposes as they were 1/8th inch thick and easy to come by in my tool box. I'm sure one washer spacing on each bolt wouldn't have any negitive effects on the brakes, i just like the idea of a single plate spacer.

Re: All disc brakes?
I seen that write up also, Thats not a bad way to do it either. One of these days I'm gonna go out to the junkyard and snag the park brake cables and park brake shoes off the blazer I took the calipers off. That way I will still have a working parking brake, I need to have it working for launching my boat. I fish alot during the summer.
I got the calipers for 10 bucks each, and the brackets for 5 bucks each. So before I got the rotors I had 30 dollars in it. Including the rotors (25 each new) I have $80 into it. The guy at the junkyard said I can get the e brake cables and park brake shoes for ten bucks, I just need to get them. |

Re: All disc brakes?
Off a 2 door blazer should work well but like I said before you'll have to atach and adjust...It is all a bolt on swap in terms of everything bolts right up with no need of major modifications...I.E.no need for different/new prop valves , ABS still functions properly , no welding , cutting and so on.... But you will have to adjust the cables and what not.. |

Re: All disc brakes?
I've made a discovery... 94-96 caprices use rear discs, and have the same 4-bolt housing end as late model s10s.
of course the caprice has a 5x5" bolt circle versus our 5x4-3/4" bolt circle, so the rotors would have to be redrilled.... unless you could use a 98-05 blazer rotor with the caprice caliper and backing plate. both rotors are 11.61" in diameter, the only problem may be with the drum-type parking brake not being compatible between the 2 vehicles. the reason I am saying this is because the caprice backing plate would not require a spacer as the blazer part does.... at least I think. anyone know if the parts interchange? |

Re: All disc brakes?
Well I do know on the blazers the drum style parking brake is 190mm....Would you know if the rotors are the same thickness? Do you have a pic/diagram of the axle flange for the caprice? Why wouldn't the caprice's caliper bracket not need a spacer?? Just questions not sarcasm..

I read that the distance is the same from the wheel mounting surface to the housing end regardless of brake type. I do not know the inner diameter or thickness though. I'm trying to find more info.

The axle flange offset is the same on caprices and blazers regardless of brake type?
An example of difference in axle flange offset for those who can't visualize. Drum Rears axle> [----] <axle flange Disc Rears axle> [---] <axle flange Notice how the Drum Rear has 4 dashs and the Disc Rear only has 3...As I said just an example for those who don't understand... |

do the 08-02 F-body rear discs require a spacer on a drum rear axle housing? if they don't, then it would not be possible to use them on a blazer rear end, correct?

Re: All disc brakes?
So I have been reading and I hear that to go from 2wd drums to 2wd discs, that you need to space them out or you need to move your axle flange inward and reweld it. Which one is it?
I bought a set off of a 2000 2wd blazer for my 2001 s10 |

Re: All disc brakes?
If you cut 1/4" off and then welded the axle flange back on then you would just need a LARGER spacer. The distance from the axle flange to the axle hub would be greater thus a longer spacer. BillsDuster said he only needed 1/8" ..Chargedextreme says he only needed 3/8".... So anywhere from 1/8" to 1/4" but the fact is you will need to space the caliper bracket out from the axle flange.

i guess iam too late but i will throw mine intot he mix. 93s10 w/ a 02 2wd s10blazer rear. Swapped the whole 7.5 rear for the new 8.5 rear and everything bolted right up. Fit like a glove. The ebrake cable was the biggest PITA with the swap in my opinion.
