ZR2 Rear End?

I have a Sonoma and I'm wanting positraction for the rear end. I have the opportunity to purchase a ZR2 rear end (Which i have been told comes factory with the locking differential) cheaper than getting posi installed on my current rear end. Would the ZR2 rear end fit in my truck with little to no fab work?

Re: ZR2 Rear End?

the rear also may have a different gear ratio..since the truck comes stock with 31 inch tall tires...

yes but as mentioned erlier just swap out the diff, and also as mentioned check the gear rations

try finding a limited slip diff out of a standard 4x4 s10 at a junkyard or something cause they were an option from the factory, then you dont have to dealwith axle widths and gear ratios

Re: ZR2 Rear End?

Ok,also isnt a ZR2 a 8.5,thus the reason I didnt think you could just swap out the gears.
I may be wrong though.
I agree though,go too a junkyard and look for the newer 2nd gens with an G80 RPO code, thats the limited slip dif,my 2WD ZQ8 has this option,so its not just 4wd's.

Posi/limited slip/G80 was optional in most S10's I believe, and it may have been standard or mandatory in some models (like the SS.)

The 4wd is wider than the 2wd and the ZR2 is wider yet, 3.9-4" wider but not sure if that measurement is over the 4wd or 2wd--could be over the 4wd. The ZR2 has the 8.5" and most of the others have the 7.5/7.625" though I think some v6 5-speeds had the 8.5" too. The 8.5" is the same type used in mid-80's 442 & GN's, not sure if the same # of splines. The 7.5/7.625 is similar to the Monte SS & Camaro but I think later years may have had more splines.

As for posi/limited slip, make sure you figure out which size & splines you have first, then look for a unit from a 4wd, they should be easier to find with a limited slip in it than a 2wd. I personally have never seen a 4wd that wasn't posi/G80/limited slip.

Also keep in mind that you just can't take a unit out of one and just slap it into yours--rearend gears have to be set up properly with backlash and pinion depth and preload, so you will still have to pay to have it installed & set up properly... some places want the rear out of the vehicle and some will do it in the vehicle for more money.

That's why it's usually cheaper to go with a complete rearend that matches (2wd-->2wd, 4wd-->4wd.) Wheels also have a different backspacing because of the wider rearends in 4wd & ZR2.

Actually the G80 code is not found very often, and its about as much of a crap shoot in 4wd's as it is in 2wd's.Although all the new fullsize 2wd's have the G80,its standard now and not just an option.
Im pretty sure all 2nd gens have the 7 5/8's rear,I forget what year they switched.
S10warehouse is always selling rear ends, but your looking at about $500-$600 for a full OEM rear end.
Good luck though guy.
BTW,just an FYI,my wifes old 2001 GMC Jimmy 4WD was not a G80,but my lowered ZQ8 03 2WD is a G80 so go figure,LOL.

Re: ZR2 Rear End?

With all that said

G80 was standard on the ZR2 right? I test drove a Zr2 highrider yesterday and it did have the G80 code. I always though posi and 3.73 gears was what all the ZR2 Rigs came with as part of the ZR2 package.

i checked mine this morning to see what my lil 4x4 had,,it has the gu6 code and g80 beside it,,so i see its 3.42,s but does the g80 beside it mean its a 8.5 rear end in my 95 model? it is wider than my other s-10,s i had also?
i was gonna swap it out for a 8.8 rear and match a d30 straight axle up front, but if it has a 8.5 rear"it is lsd" then maybe i should keep it in there and not go to the trouble with the 8.8..
i know the 8.8 will hold up to 35,s easy and a d30 is a good match for the front..any opinions? thanks

Re: ZR2 Rear End?

^^^^^ Bump! I have the same question as the post above me. I have a 2002 sonoma 4.3 4x4 an the GU6 G80 codes. Does that mean I have an 8.5 rear axle?
