Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

I am not going to do a step by step because if you SEARCH you will MANY threads on this same subject. Search, use it....love it.

You want to remove your air cleaner off the throttle body.

You will see below that a black "tube" like thing directly over the motor in the middle towards the front of the motor with two bolts on it. Remove it and inside will be the thermostat. If this didnt help and you cant figure out how to do it by searching on this forum.....go buy yourself a Haynes manual, which is a good investment anyway.

You have to remove the throttle cable brackets as well as you can't get the studs out of the thermostat housing with them in place. Just swapped mine out this past weekend.

There's a thread somewhere in the 4.3 section with pics and complete step by step.

Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

I know where the stat is located but don't want to waste time out in the cold trying to figure out how to remove the air cleaner from the throttle body. Have searched but the only info says remove the air intake but not how.

Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

To get the bonnet off of the TB, my 98 has a plastic wingnut bolt that you unscrew. Once it is loose you angle the bonnet, forward I thing and it comes away. My bonnet has a picture of the motion on it. Installation is reverse of removal. And of course yours could be different.

Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

What year? Any 96+ 4.3 intake has a wingnut on top of the throttle body holding it on. I've seen the ears break off on some but there's still the bolt/stud there holding it on.

It's behind the hat that goes over the throttle body. You can just see it sticking up here in this picture. I don't have any better ones and have a cold air intake now.

Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

hey zeek98 I just got a chance to check on my problem. The reason I could not see a wing nut is because it was not there. It may have been removed in a previous repair and was never replaced. Will change the stat on Saturday when it is a little warmer here. Thanks Again

Bud if you're having trouble figuring out how to get the intake tube off how do you plan on changing the thermostat yourself? Not trying to be a dick or anything, I just hate seeing people get in over their heads lol.

Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

You might want to stick something on there to hold the TB hat on, it can pop loose, and inhale dirt/spring vaccum leaks.

Re: thermostat replacement 2001 4.3

It's been months since i visited this club and finally came out here. Well, there are so many discussions that could help you address the issue you've been in thru. some websites offer repair manuals at around $20. All you need is to input the car make and model of your auto. On the other hand, you're still free to drag your car to the nearby repair outlet. Done the replaced almost two years ago in a shop named AAMCO of Pittsburgh. the service was great and guys out there were patient...im recommending this place as your second option. Just contact bill and told him you were referred by me. here's the contact information by the way;
