How to remove shift knob

How do you remove the shift knob on a 97 s10 5 speed, i looked at it and couldnt figure out a good battle plan to take it off no set screw or anything on it do i just need to unscrew it? if so which way? i wanna do an 8 ball, and searched around the forum but there was no real explanation on how exactly you get the damn thing off

Re: How to remove shift knob

ok basically you cut the rubber off the top and there will be a plastic shell inside. then simply smash this shell on the concrete (wear eye protection) until most of it breaks off then with some channel locks you can remove the remaining plastic pieces.

the end of the shifter is not threaded. the hole piece is glued on. might not sound pretty but its really easy.

Re: How to remove shift knob

push down on the shift boot and you can see the bolt that holds the shift lever in place. loosen the bolt and unscrew the whole thing.

Re: How to remove shift knob

changed out mine today, I got a billet shifter, shaft and all. Just give it a good turn it will come loose and screw off, the top piece im not sure about. But to get the whole thing off, just put something between your teeth and twist, it will come loose.

I have no clue man, a buddy of mine gave it to me and he said he bought it at autozone a few years back. it just slips on and you tighten 3 set screws.

since then i upgraded to something much better and the shifter i posted above is now just collecting dust.

Re: How to remove shift knob

ok the threads on the shaft on the bottom of the shifter are impossible to take off, i guess GM put one on mine where the knob and arm assembly are threaded to the shift arm on the trans/ and they used loctite gold and i stripped the whole not on my nut on the bottom of my shifter arm/knob

Re: How to remove shift knob

As for the threaded shifter or not, 94-95 have threaded shifters. And I believe that 96+ with the NV3500 also had threaded shifters. The NV1500's had the shifter moved closer to the seat than the other manual tranny's so I assume only they had the glued on shift handles.

Re: How to remove shift knob

NV3500 sits in the same spot the nv1500, as far as shifter location.

Re: How to remove shift knob

if you have the none threaded type you need to drill a 23/32 inch hole in your shifter

Not from what I've seen.

96 dime

It's farther forward than on the nv1500. My t5 is also in the same location as above. Whereas the NV1500's are closer to the seat as in your truck.

BUT!!!11 my center console came out of a 2001 5 speed GMC Jimmy with a 4.3 which has a nv3500 and my nv1500 fits nicely in that same location. weird though because i have seen a 96 isuzu hombre with the nv1500

Maybe they changed it on later years. I know 94-95 are definantly more forward than in your truck. And some of the 96+ NV3500's do have the shifter farther forward. Either way, if the shifter is farther forward, they appear to have the screwed on knob whereas the ones closer seem to be glued on. I'm sure there are probably exceptions, but that's what it looks like so far.

EDIT: That picture above is "parker215" truck which is a 96 with the 4.3. So it has the NV3500, not the nv1500.

My '03 NV3500 is way closer to the seats than that one. Maybe they redesigned it in '98 or something. Mine is also the glued/pressed on type.
