Fullsize bumper mod???

I am not willing to pay nearly $400 for a bumper so I'm planning on doing the work myself. I will list my plans and if anyone has suggestions or has done this please comment. I DID search many times and there ARE many threads but none about someone making this themselves.
I have the 98+ bumper and a fullsize (silverado/sierra) bumper that I just picked up for $25.
*I plan on cutting the fullsize bumper near the corners and bringing them toward the center (looks to be about 4 inches each side).
*Once I have the bumper matching the width of my truck I'll cut the top off just before it bends. I am doing this because I want the body line on my fender to still transtion to the bumper. I will cut the top half of the stock bumper and mate it to the lower half of the fullsize bumper (make sense?).
The "v" in both bumpers are similar so I think this will work and look better than the ones you can buy from grant.

I have a couple weeks before this gets started so I'll be checking back to see if someone can help. As well, I will post up the work I do as to help anyone else. I know many people who would love the fullsize bumper but don't have $350+shipping for it.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

yeah i wanna do this cause the $350-400 isn't cheap. i'd rather pick a few up at the junkyard and have a fun time cutting them up and getting them to look good. kinda goes along with that whole "built not bought" BS . i'm also gonna have to make a plate box too since VA is gay and uses front plates.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

Worked on it some today, just removed my old bumper (that has been wrecked). I then measured, the original looks to be 54" to the furthest corners. The new bumper is 64" so I found the best (flat, similar, easiest) locations on each side to cut out 5". I had one corner cut off then it started pouring down so I may work on it tomorrow. I wasn't lucky enough to start out with a smooth bumper so I'll also be filling in the trim holes. I am still kicking around a few ideas for how I'm grafting the s10 fender line. Here are some pics. I used a 4" grinder that I bought at harbor freight today for 16 bucks and a cut-off wheel, I really didn't think it'd turn out as straight as it did.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

More progress... I had today off and decidied I'd actually work (after mowing the lawn). I got the other corner cut off and c clamped all pieces together, removed stock bumper and kinda fitted it all together. Looks okay but you can see that there is a ton more work to do. I will be using the pieces I cut out to add to the sides, this way they'll match up with the fenders. Still thinking out my plan of attack on the fender line, pretty sure I'll cut sections from the old and blend with the new, easier said I'm sure.

I don't think I'll need the whole top half, just the corners. Everything seems to line up fine and it will be easier to do it this way. I also like the look of the bumper being more tucked in anyway.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

I am happy with how this thing is looking but I am stuck until I can borrow a welder. If anyone has better ideas for what I'm about to explain please comment. oh yeah, thanks hof for the compliment, the tucked look wasn't intended at first but I really like it.
Anyway...
I will but cutting a line between those two holes that are facing. Then I'll cut my 5" sections I removed earlier down to 3" and fill that space. I think I will only need to cut about 6" of the stock bumper (probably from fender to bend if need be) and cut a matching line out of this bumper. Like I said, please throw some comments out there, I do this stuff by myself and it's my first project like this.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

I would like to make one and paint it body color.
I'll have to buy a full size bumper.
Knowing the junk yards here, they'll want like 150-300 for one.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

Really been delayed with work and tons of other events but I'm back into this. Originally I had planned to paint this bumper in the end but I'm really liking the chrome look. How can I smooth this and chrome it as well? I'm sure you can't chrome bondo, right? How would I get the metal that smooth or should I just paint it?

I did find this http://ezinearticles.com/?Chrome-Fib...pers&id=157899 looks like there may be a way but the secondary link isn't working. Hopefully this can be done at a reasonable price.

Re: Fullsize bumper mod???

I have a three day weekend coming up, should be put together and on the truck. Probably will paint it for now cause I'm broke but thanks for the tip on the lead. I knew they did that back in the day for hot rods, it seems like they've really refined the process and made it easier. I pretty bummed that it's been taking so long, I just had to replace the computer and wire harness to the truck so I'm paying off a huge bill (hence the two jobs). I'll stop crying now...
