Question Cutting my coils....

Hey guys.....I hope someone can help me out. I want to cut my front coils so that they lower my front end 3". This would be a total of 5" with my drop spindles. Please don't just tell me to buy a set of springs; that's really not an option right now. If someone knows how much to cut off, PLEEZE let me know!

buy a set of springs!! they arent super expensive....

about cutting coils now, im sure everyone will say the same thing: dont do it! cutting, heating, whatever, weakens the springs and can lead to failure; ie breakage. i dont recommend it at all. lata

Re: Cutting my coils....

umm coils are made of spring steel so when you cut a couple coils out you weeken the overall tension strength that the coil can hold up. i cut mine on my old nissan hard body about 9years ago an man that bitch would bottom out and bounce

Re: Cutting my coils....

If buying isn't an option just wait. You may find after failure you wind up costing yourself more money in the long run (broken record right). I'm sure someone on here is willing to sell you a set pretty cheap, Christams is right around the corner so deals will be out there.

Re: Cutting my coils....

Cutting them not only lowers the height, it also reduces the spring rate. If you still want to do it, cut a little at a time, and re-assemble each time til you get your height. Don't use a torch.

Re: Cutting my coils....

Use an angle grinder and only cut one coil. that will lower you about 2 or 3 inches, no point in buying new ones, it actually makes the spring rate stiffer as long as you dont get them hot. make sure you cut from the top. Cut from the bottom and they wont seat right, You will also need a wheel alignment

Re: Cutting my coils....

So, if you can't afford to buy the springs and do it the right way, what happens if you cut to much off of the factory springs? Yeah, real smart dumbass. Just keep your hackjob ass up in Pittsburg and away from the rest of the world.

Re: Cutting my coils....

Cutting to get a 1" drop wont be bad, probably not even noticeable but 3" is asking for it and if you have to ask how much to cut then you shouldn't be cutting the springs to begin with.

My mistake, it increases the spring rate.

Re: Cutting my coils....

i had one coil removed on my last S10 and it gave it a 3inch drop. i suggest no more then half a coil itll give you a drop still keep it from bottoming out with the rest of your drop.it should give a total of four inches. dont let the coil heat up when you go to cut it. when your cutting and it starts to heat up stop until it cools again.
