Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA
Blazer headlights: yes, as he said, drag reduction. Instead of recessed, air catching bowls on the front its smooth and flush.
CAI: yes, I saw a 1 - 1.5 mpg increase. I had a guy here swearing up and down my CAI did nothing for me and it absolutely had to be something else, or some problem that accidentally got fixed when I put the CAI on...it my truck, i know, I check my MPG twice per week as I drive 800+ miles per week for work. Its not a huge increase but its something.
I put a new CAT on, magnaflow 'performance' CAT but didnt see any improvement. Probably because the old one was pretty much hollow anyway....no restriction there.
I get 27-28mpg with a bed full of equipment weighing about 400-500lbs, sometimes more if I have to pick up special toolsetc. 26 minimum, IF I have a lot more city driving than usual...city meaning downtown Indy or places I cant get to efficiently via highway.
Best things to do is keep it under 70 and reduce weight/drag. I seem to do best at 55 - 60mph. Been running 65 lately and economy dropped about .5mpg. Engine Mods will add up, but none of them alone give a huge gain. Lowering your truck, if it feasible, will help a lot too. I have heard the whip antenna alone accounts for 5% of your drag but have no proof to back it up. Smaller mirrors will reduce drag too; which is also on my list.
I still plan on the whole deal; CAI, underdrive pulleys (since most of my driving is highway) E Fan, Blazer/Jimmy headlights, cat-back exhaust, computer tune, etc etc. I figure with 28mpg average now, if I didnt haul so much crap around all the time Id already be seeing 30mpg. I have a 35mpg goal set to hit by the end of this year....mods come slow as my pay come slow these days, but they will be done eventually.
