Smile BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

For the s-10 people that are looking to get the best possible MPG out of your truck. I was wondering what MODs were the most successful. My goal is to get my truck around 30mpg. I have done most of the basic stuff. rebuilt 2.2L engine, new CAI, new fuel filter, new Magnaflow 23462. Taken off around 100lbs of extra pounds. (looking to remove the bed and install a aluminum flatbed) Have Low rolling resistance tires. I have not reprogrammed the computer or installed a turbo. My next project is installing a 56mm TB. Anyway, so far it has been a lot of fun. Any input is welcome. I am at about 26MPG

Thanks. It's not immaculate but not bad for 192,000+ miles. It runs to good to mess with, but I would like to get a CAI sometime just for the hell of it.

Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

Sorry, My truck, 98 GMC Sonoma SLS 2.2L 2wd (Extended cab) 70,000 miles
I am in the Mountains of WV, yesterday I went 200 miles, got about 28mpg.
If I lived in a flat state I think I would be at 30mpg.
I have to gun it to get up some of the hills/mountains to keep my speed at 60+ on the hwy & I try to stay off the gas down hill.

I am shocked that some of you are doing better then me with a stock truck. Makes me think that bolt on mods don't do much of anything until you get the computer tuned, but that may be the same for stock s-10s.

At least i know my goal of 30mpg is achievable out of my old truck.

The cold air intake doesn't help your fuel mileage on these trucks. I was getting 30 mpg highway with my '95 2.2 automatic with routine maintenance and a fiberglass tonneau cover. I rarely did over 65 mph though.

Odd, it helped mine to the tune of almost 1.5 MPG.

Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

smaller, skinnier tires and a lowering kit will make the most bang for the buck in terms of gas mileage. Decrease the aero-dynamic drag and the friction between the tires and the road. You can easily lower the s10's for under $300 depending on how low you go and smaller tires are cheaper than the stock size.

Yes, aerodynamic drag reduction.

Every morning its been drove this tank i had to let it warm up which causes MPG to go down and it still managed 28.5

Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

My trip today! I have a single cab fleetside, 2000 automatic 2.2l Xtreme with 83k miles. New Delphi fuel injectors, cleaned the throttle body, K&N filter, Gibson Cat Back Exhaust, Powertrax limited slip with Richmond lube, Kumho 245/50/16 tires inflated to 36psi and stock 4.10 rear end gears. Driver only, set the cruise control on 70mph, no a/c and got 28.28 mpg. Came back with the bed loaded with boxes full of stuff and a/c running full, cruise control on most of the way, I got 21.67 mpg with gray tarp loosely covering it. I estimated the load about 550 lbs. Started on a full tank in both directions. Combined both ways average would be just over 24mpg. One time I drove to FL, no a/c on, only stopped for gas and got 29.4mpg.

Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

Blazer headlights: yes, as he said, drag reduction. Instead of recessed, air catching bowls on the front its smooth and flush.

CAI: yes, I saw a 1 - 1.5 mpg increase. I had a guy here swearing up and down my CAI did nothing for me and it absolutely had to be something else, or some problem that accidentally got fixed when I put the CAI on...it my truck, i know, I check my MPG twice per week as I drive 800+ miles per week for work. Its not a huge increase but its something.

I put a new CAT on, magnaflow 'performance' CAT but didnt see any improvement. Probably because the old one was pretty much hollow anyway....no restriction there.

I get 27-28mpg with a bed full of equipment weighing about 400-500lbs, sometimes more if I have to pick up special toolsetc. 26 minimum, IF I have a lot more city driving than usual...city meaning downtown Indy or places I cant get to efficiently via highway.

Best things to do is keep it under 70 and reduce weight/drag. I seem to do best at 55 - 60mph. Been running 65 lately and economy dropped about .5mpg. Engine Mods will add up, but none of them alone give a huge gain. Lowering your truck, if it feasible, will help a lot too. I have heard the whip antenna alone accounts for 5% of your drag but have no proof to back it up. Smaller mirrors will reduce drag too; which is also on my list.

I still plan on the whole deal; CAI, underdrive pulleys (since most of my driving is highway) E Fan, Blazer/Jimmy headlights, cat-back exhaust, computer tune, etc etc. I figure with 28mpg average now, if I didnt haul so much crap around all the time Id already be seeing 30mpg. I have a 35mpg goal set to hit by the end of this year....mods come slow as my pay come slow these days, but they will be done eventually.

I've got a 96 s10 and my mpg isn't that great I've got a 2.2 5speed around town I get 18-20 and highway at best like 24 from what it sounds like it's not normal
I've got diamond fire plugs accel plug wires and I switch trans fluid to royal purple synthetic and use synthetic oil and use Lucas oil fuel injector cleaner about every 10000 miles so I don't understand why it's not that great

Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

Depends on how you drive it, also, what's the weather like, cold weather will decrease mileage and the gas right now does as well. 24-25 mpg on the highway is what my 94 used to get stock, now that's it's lifted and bigger tires, more like 20-22, used to be 22-23, but I just started driving it again after close to 2.5 years. 20-22 used to be typical for my in town, but that depends on how much stopping you do and a lot of other factors.

Check your tire pressures, i set mine at 35, the school's auto shop i used to be in always set tires at 40 psi but i think thats stretching it a bit.. have you changed your O2 sensor(s) recently? they make a huge difference sometimes depending on how old they are..

runs smooth, starts easy, decent power.
I do know the O2 sensor needs replacing, but other than that I have no codes.

Re: BEST 2.2 MPG s10 - SONOMA

Let's see...the tank is 18.5 gallons and you get 150 miles...so thats 150/18.5 = 7.7mpg. I'd put that in the very poor mileage category and not normal.

My low fuel light comes on at about 14 gallons to fill, and even that would give less than 11 mpg if I got 150 miles out of a tank.

Did the mileage drop when you removed the cat?
