Alternator replacing?

My friend is gonna come over and fix the alternator. Anyone who has gotten this changed before, do you know how long, on average, it takes to change this? My friend knows exactly what he's doing. Just out of curiosity.

Re: Alternator replacing?

About 20 min I could have the old one out and new one in and I have only done it once. Getting the belts back on is the trickiest part I found.

The belts were easy. Mine was in kinda the middle. Was PIA to get out.

Re: Alternator replacing?

Just remember to disconnect the battery ground. Seen new alts get fried because guy was too lazy to undo a terminal.

Meaning.... to disconnect the battery when replacing the alternator?

Re: Alternator replacing?

Yeah take the black (negative) cable off. The 2.2s are a pain in the ass. Took me an hour or 2 the 1st time I did it.

Yup!

And, to make life easier for yourself - there's a spot in the belt tensioner that will fit a 3/4'' ratchet, so you can just crank back on it to give the belt enough slack to come off. You can do the same thing to get it back on.

Depending on whether or not this new alternator has an underdrive pulley, you're going to want to consider a new, and possibly shorter belt while you're at it!

Re: Alternator replacing?

I think it took me about 3 hours when I did it.. I never worked on a car before that though, it was my first real job. My other truck took about 15 mins total though, but then again I had an e-fan, intake, no inner fenders, and no heat/ac components so it was a hell of a lot easier!

Re: Alternator replacing?

You may also want to consider replacing the power and ground wires as is noted in the thread I posted below since it is a cheap replacement and could alleviate further electrical problems down the road.

What's so different about the 2.2? How come it would take longer?

The place the alternator is on the 2.2 has to be the worst place to put one. Seems kinda odd they put it down so low.

When my friend did mine, all he had to do was take out the battery. There was somehow enough room for him to get to it. If it was me, I'd probably have had to take off something else too, cause there's little to no room to get to it.
