Re: 98 sonoma trans prob.

My 98 s10 had a similar problem. Started out shifting in and out of overdrive nonstop at @ 35-40mph. Drove like that for a while and then more problems came about...Headlights would flicker a bit, speedo and other guages would drop to 0 and when this happened the truck wouldnt downshift to 1st and wouldnt shift past 3rd. Long story short on this is it was the ignition switch. Very easy to do and from what a couple tranny shops said was somewhat typical. Fixed every single problem I was having. Was about $120 I think. Was a while ago. Good luck! Hope its that simple for you cuz I changed my tranny before I learned this!

Change both shift solenoids in the valve body and you will be fine. Common failure among 4L60E's.

Re: 98 sonoma trans prob.

yeah ive been to many tranny shops and they all tell me something different but i finally went with the last place and they told me to change the lock-out solenoid, it didnt help but ill try the others. silly question but are those located in the tranny pan like the lock-out solenoid. (im no mechanich)

Yeah , unfortunately you will have to drop the pan again. My '00 did exactly as yours did twice in it's lifetime. I'm confident once you swap those out it'll be fixed. They're easy to change once the pan is off.....I used only a pick and some needle nose pliers to r&r them.

Re: 98 sonoma trans prob.

The only 2 that I think you need to replace are the shift solenoids. They are located at the back of the trans (toward the driveshaft) and point toward the driveshaft.
Go to autozone.com and look at their online repair manual.......it will show you where they are and there may be instructions to r&r them.
