wtf was gm thinking... heater core

how many of you guys have ever changed a heater core in your trucks... i personally own a 00 jimmy bu tthe truck i am talking about is a 99 jimmy 4wd 2dr... what a pita.. gotta take the whole dash out, then a/c unit under the hood, then that stupid black box that souronds the core itself.. all for 3 little screws... i mean really wtf... i was so mad... i spent all day sunday into monday doing this... let alone it was below freezng out all day... and i was outside cause my c10 is occuping the much needed garage space... my buddy caled me up saterday night and asked me if i could do it for him and i stupidly said yeah... so sunday morning i stopped by the local pick a part and saw what i was in for and almost cried..lol but now its back together and i must say the heat works great now... i still dont know what gm was thinking on that one though... i could have delt without having to remove the a/c box

Re: wtf was gm thinking... heater core

Re: wtf was gm thinking... heater core

yeah i have done probley a dozen or so of them... this was the first time i had to take out the blower motor and all from under the hood... normally i just lay on my back and take it out without having to take the dash and crap out... sometimes jsut the center console but im pretty good with getting things done in a timely manner... it jsut baffled me how rediculous it was

Re: wtf was gm thinking... heater core

I never did it before but I got it done in 9 hours. Now that I know which/where the screws are I would estimate about 4-5 hours.

Re: wtf was gm thinking... heater core

yeah im sure it can be done faster but im not use to doing al that crap... i wanted to shoot someone when i got the dash out and all the visible bolts onl to find out there are more outside the truck... not exactly fn to be seaching around for mystery bolts in the cold ass weather

Re: wtf was gm thinking... heater core

when i worked at the chevy dealership the guy i worked with, me and him did one in 45 minutes. for the life of me i now cant remember how he showed me, but when that time comes, i will definately be calling him up. we partially removed the dash and slid it rearward but left everything except the A/C control unit plugged in. theres one 7mm bolt that down in that plastic box, i think thats why you gotta take it off, i learned a trick about getting it out and back in so you dont have to take the box off
