Why doesn't my 4 wheel drive engage

alright, lets see, its a `95 Chevy Blazer LT 4x4 4 door. we just got some sick snow and I go to drive home from a party, I push the little button for some 4HI and it flashes and then goes to solid, like normal. So the 4HI button is now solidly lit up, i start driving and my rear end is going all willy nilly if I apply more than an inadequate amount of throttle. So, I stop, i think hmmm... maybe i'll try it again, I start to move slowly, I shift back into 2 wheel drive. I then hit the 4HI button again, i lights up, stays lit nothing, still going ass end out on application of throttle. I turn my blower motor down and i mute my radio. Go through the paces again, light comes on, I heard the sound of soemthing happening in my transfer case, kind of a dull "clunk" my ass end still wants to go all willy nilly and slide around. I try 4LO, same deal low range will come on, light will come on, t case makes the clunk sound and it still doesn't make my front wheels move. I had a buddy look when i hit the gas in snow, no movement on the front wheels.

So, i want to know, is it going to be something as painful to my wallet as rebuilding the t-case or will it be something like the transfer case shift motor?

Sounds like vacuum actuator. Mounted underneath the battery tray.

Re: Why doesn't my 4 wheel drive engage

On my "99" Jimmy if the front axle doesn't engage the lights flash. Yours may be different. Check the actuator under the battery tray. Also check the vacuum lines leading into it for leaks and cracks. With the car running and in 4x4, pull the vacuum line from the actuator and see if vacuum is present. If there is no vacuum, check the vacuum switch mounted in the center of the fire wall. It is a solenoid that controls the vacuum to the actuator under the battery tray. Sometimes the solenoid sticks and will not open and allow vacuum to the vacuum actuator. If the vacuum lines are good, and you have no vacuum at the vacuum actuator, try tapping on the solenoid with the butt end of a screwdriver to see if the solenoid opens up. If you have vacuum at the actuator, check for free movement of it, if it doesn't move (watch the actuator while engaging 4x4) the actuator or the connected cable is bad. Hope this makes sense.
