What to look for ? Blazer/Jimmy
Hey guys. This is my first post here.. so first off, nice site!!
I'm a die-hard Grand Prix enthusiast, but it's time now to let one of them go and get into a 4x4. I'm looking for either a Blazer or Jimmy. I've been reading and searching the site, but didn't quite find what I was looking for: I'd probably be in the market for a 1997-2000 year range. Is there a certain year to stay away from in these or a certain year to definately get? Is there a certain motor to avoid? Any VERY common maintenance facts to be aware of? I'd LOVE to get into a 2k Jimmy Diamond Edition. Black with the grey on the bottom. I love two-tone. Thanks in advance!!! -Matt Last edited by F1Matt : 01-29-2005 at 10:51 AM. |

There's only one engine choice, it's been the same since 96, and obviously, the newer the engine, the better (unless you find a low mileage older one).

Re: What to look for ? Blazer/Jimmy
make sure the 4x4 works--test it yourself, both in 4-hi and 4-lo. ask the owner how to put it in 4x4 and when it should be used....if they don't know then it probably means they used it wrong and likely caused damage to it.

Re: What to look for ? Blazer/Jimmy
Look at the ball joints in front; you can always tell originals because they are held in with rivets. Replacement ball joints will have bolts w/nuts. Ball joints can wear out as fast as 30-40k miles when not regularly greased, so depending on mileage make sure you look at this. A shop may charge $600 to change all 4.
Also look at the remote oil lines. When the oil isn't changed often, these can go very soon. Oil gets caustic when not changed regularly, and it eats away at the rubber. It's a good indication of how well the engine has had oil changes by the condition of those lines. |
