what do you all think?

ok i just read a post about the oil pressure gauge. mine does some thong similar. when the engine is cold and the oil pressure is 20. once it gets warm it drops to 0. if you give it gas it climes. at full acceleration it might go to 40. it does not click, knock, ping,or any thing it just drives perfect.. so i read that it is most likely the oil pressure sensor. is that right? i know i need to go to a shop and get the pressure checked but i just have not had time. would an oil change place be able to do the pressure check?

thanks to all any input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: what do you all think?

i was driving to day and it still drives good but the gauge is scaring me. i still think the thing is defunct. like when the engine is cold it would seem the gauge works but once the engine gets warm it goes to low pressure until you give it gas.

thanks and i would like an answer because it is my daily drive and i cant afford to hurt the motor

Re: what do you all think?

i would replace the oil pressure sensor... it seems to be temp related but its still at fault... one wayto check and make sure you have oil pressure is to check your oil before you start the truck in the morning when its cold out then drive to work, school, etc and then check it again... if i reads low then oil is moving around in the engine like it should.... or you could use a can of seafoam and dump it in your oil and clean the hell out of the thing and then change the sensor to eliminate all possiblitites besides the pump itself

Re: what do you all think?

well i have checked mt oil when the engine is cold and it is in the normal range and once the gauge says low oil pressure i checked it and it was at the same place. and i did seafoam it and it made it run better and i would have to say that is once it started to do the LOP thing

thanks what do you all thing

Re: what do you all think?

If you added any seafoam to your oil, make sure you change it almost immediately. that stuff is made to clean out the gunk and get the sludge into the bottom of the engine which is bad because you can clog your oil pump screen if there is enough of it. it will also thin your oil, which you may not really want or need at this point.

Get a new pressure sensor/sending unit and get it installed. if the oil pressure is really at 0 then the engine should get shut down by the computer. IIRC there may be two sensors, one for your guage and one for the computer.

Sort of....... One sensor but 2 wires: 1 for the gauge and 1 for the fuel pump relay.

But I agree. Replace the sensor right away.

Re: what do you all think?

well i plan on it but first i don't know if i have the 2 or 3 prong sensor. and then secondly it is almost imposable to get to the sensor. some one said to take the distributor of but that did nothing it was much lower(more like an inch but with big hands impossibly to low for me)and i went to the junk yard and it was so perfect the top of the engine was gone and the bottom was all that was left and the sensor was like on a silver platter but i first did not know or have the correct size tool to get it off and it was on there like nothing else. the sensor is going to be $20 from junk yard, $30 for 2 prong new, and $50 for 3 prong new. is there a secret to getting these off?

thanks to all

Re: what do you all think?

Sorry for the confusion. It should be 3 wires: 2 for the FP relay and 1 for the gauge.

Don't pay so much! Their only $30 for the 3 wire at Rock Auto.com

Re: what do you all think?

I don't know what they look like now, but there used to be a special socket that basically did every oil sensor out there.

if your guage is reading that low, screw Christmas presents. Better to spend the $50 now than worry about where you'll come up with a grand for an engine overhaul or replacement.

it had low pressure for a while.then outta the blue i cranked it to leave work and there was a loud clicking from the valves so i limped it home and tore it down.

but im not saying thats what your problem is.

yeah, its just a socket.it has rounded corners on the sensor.a;so,you might have to pull the distributor to get it out.all depends

That would be difficult and expensive. A shop would have to pull the existing sending unit and install a "T" fitting to run the sending unit plus a test gauge, then test the pressure. After testing, they would have to remove the T and reinstall the sending unit. It would be a lot cheaper just to replace the sending unit.
