Towing with my 2 door 2wd. dropped
my blazer is dropped 5/6 and has air shocks in the rear. we are looking to get a 6x14 trailer for my dads project car. it will weight about 2000 pounds when done. will my blazer have any troubles towing it? we dont have a truck and my dad doesnt really want to get one.
so would i need to do anything to my blazer besides get a hitch to tow with it? |

Re: Towing with my 2 door 2wd. dropped
I've logged thousands of miles towing with my 2.2L S10 with 4.10's out back as well as dragging race car trailers, equipment trailers, and I did a bit of trucking with other trucks. My truck is at stock ride height.
The issues that come with towing are the height of the hitch, GVWR of the trailer, tongue weight, tire rating, single or tandem axles, trailer brakes, and driver. Hitch Height is crucial as the trailer needs to sit level or slightly pitched down in the front. As you go down the road at highway speeds the torque of the motor will lift the hitch up some, but not as much as say a 1500 will. When you set hitch height, do it with a fully loaded trailer. If the trailer is pitched down in the rear, tongue weight will drop (weight moves to the tail) and it will sway. Simple as that. Tongue weight should be at least 10% of the loaded weight of the trailer. I use 15%. If the tongue weight is less than 10% trailer weight, the trailer will sway like all hell, and can get so bad it will throw you in a ditch, trailer brakes or not. Tire wise, from experience a good stiff sidewall is nice, but towing with low-profiles sucks.. they have no give to the sidewall. Make sure the tires can handle the load and have some give (the stock tires work fine) Tandem axles tow better than single for the most part, plus they are safer with the extra tires. Trailer brakes help a ton with control and in some states are required on trailers with a GVWR >2000# regardless of loaded weight. I like my trailers to have brakes, they stop nicer and dont wear out the truck as fast. Now that the BS is out of the way, when it comes to a static dropped truck (assuming) with helper bags, the hitch will probably scrape pulling out of the driveway, on some bridges and rough roads. Although not too harmful, scraping can knock off safety chains, unplug the electric (no lights, no brakes = bad) and become an annoyance. I've done that a lot when the truck and trailer are both loaded down pretty good. Also a 2,000# load less trailer is pretty high for most of these trucks (well the 4 bangers anyway), and if you're not careful, whether in a manual or automatic you'll start breaking things mostly in the trans or cooking it. Will you be able to tow with your truck? Probably. Will it tow it well? Depends on How the trailer is loaded (may have to load the car ass first so the hitch doesn't drag) Would I tow with a dropped truck? Probably not unless I could raise her up to stock or higher on air so it tows alright and the hitch doesn't drag. What else would you need to do to your truck? Wire it up, a simple "plug and play" wiring harness will do if you're not running trailer brakes. If you are, then you need to wire up a brake controller in the cab and proper wiring out back, depending on what system you are using. Hope this helps. Re: Towing with my 2 door 2wd. dropped
I tow with my Blazer w/o any problems, it's a 16ft alum. boat, heavy steel trailer, and a 75hp motor. It pulls it fine, but I am glad that I have limited slip for pulling it out of the water.
Yours will pull that just fine, but you'll have to air up the shocks and it'll probably ride rougher. Besides the hitch you'll also need a trailer wiring harness ofcourse. Other than that you should be good to go. |
