steering pump swap?

I have a 4x4 99 jimmy. i recently did the lower intake manifold gaskets and to pull the a/c brackets off i needed to pull the power steering pulley.

when i went to put it back on, i used a torch (mistake #1) and then proceeded to attempt to tap it in with a hammer (mistake #2)

long story short when it shredded my belt because it wasn't on far enough, i took it to a shop to have it pressed on... pulley will not go on any further.

i'm assuming this means i and messed up either the shaft or pulley on my origional.

Should i attempt to replace the pulley only, or should i just buy a used pump with a pulley already on?

are there any special tools or tricks to getting the pump in?

Re: steering pump swap?

u have to press the pulley on the pump after the pump is bolted on the car. most auto parts stores sell the tool to press the pulley on and pull the old pulley off. so you would have to get the pump, pulley, tool, fluid.

Re: steering pump swap?

I'd pulled the pump off before with the puller. when it went back on, the pulley wouldn't go any further than i got it.

i took it to a shop and the mechanic broke his tool trying to press it back on.

any other thoughts? i'm really not sure what to do at this point... pay the $500 to have a new one put on, or attempt it myself.

Re: steering pump swap?

If someone has a decent quality pulley puller/installer, it should be rather easy. Even for a relative novice. I've done many very easy. It just takes some grunt work, but easy.
