Re: replacing the fuel filter on a 99 Balzer 2WD

Been about a year since I changed mine, but lets see if I can remember I may be getting some of this confused with my fullsize. You'll need 2 wrenches to undo the back side, one to unscrew the filter and the other to hold it in place and not bend the lines. At the front there are two plastic clips you just squeeze and pull the filter out, be sure to have a rag wrapped around the filter unless you like gas on you. Put the new on back in in the reverse order. It's VERY easy to do.

If you DON'T like gas spraying all over you...
Start the truck, and pull the fuel pump fuse. The truck will drain the the pressure from the fuel lines, and die. Then all you get is dribbles down your arms into your arm-pits.

To fix that, tie a rag around each wrist

make sure you use flare nut wrench to limit the chance of it stripping as well

Great ideas, thanks for all the tips. I will pull the fuse and run the gas line dry. I am not fond of a gas shower, especially at 365 a gallon.

I used a pair of wide jaw pliers to push the filter out aswell...I live in Ny so rust is just another part of a vehicle...but put one end on the plastic ring the filter slides into and the other side on the filter and press it out.

I used 2 cresent wrenches. I did it in my driveway and got sparyed with fuel. Talk about a golden shower. Good think I don't smoke. I think it made a big difference in my trucks fuel intake. How often should you change them? I changed it at 140,000 miles and got 20,000 on the new one.

GM quit putting them on. Just the "sock" in the tank on new vehicles.

Personally, I'd say change it. No idea when it needs to be changed... but 143k sounds like plenty.... btw, it's cheap insurance against something else that COULD go bad .

I forget how often your suppose to change them... For as much as they cost and as easy as they are to change, I'd just do it.
