Rearend question
I finally found the source of my vibration and it was / is the rearend. The spiders are totally shot with metal fragment laying in the unit. Anyways..........I have another good rearend out of a '98 Jimmy 4wd. This is going into my '00 Jimmy 2wd. From what I see, everything is the same EXCEPT the calipers. On the 4wd differential they are mounted (looking at the driver side ) at about the 10:00 position or towards the front of he differential. On my 2wd and on my parents '01 Xtreme, they are mounted at the 2:00 position or at the rear. Does anyone know the reason why? Also looking at it, it looks like I can rotate the plate that they mount to by 90 degrees and rotate the caliper around to the other side. Or am I missing something on this?
The reason I am putting the complete differential in insead of just the gears is to minimize downtime. I am putting new dustshields, calipers, rotors, etc on this diffy, painting it up, then plan on the weekend of swapping everything over. I'm just baffled about the caliper location if it even matters where they are located. TIA. |

Re: Rearend question
And I think mine has a little growling noiseOn the other hand, I went and bought some new backing plates last night. For as cheap as they are made, them damn things are pricey. $37.00 for a pair. Yet a pinion seal which one absolutely needs was $9. Doesn't make sense for what is probably a China made stamped out piece of thin metal. Does anyone know of a place to get e-brakes at a fair price. I know that GM would want a small fortune for them and Advanced or AZ doesn't carry them. I suppose I could reuse the ones that I have but one of the pads are chewed a little, not that it would make a difference as all it does is hold and not actually brake. At least I hope I don't need them to use for braking. LOL!!! Last edited by Calvin51 : 10-30-2009 at 06:05 AM. |

Re: Rearend question
After putting in new axle seals, pinion seal, calipers, brakes, rotors, and derusting and painting it up, I started to unbolt mine last evening. I looked at the rotors and was like WTF? The new rotors looked a tad wider. After measuring them they are about 3/4" wider than what is on my 2wd. The 4wd rearend is about 4" wider than the 2wd rearend along with the rotors being wider. So that was kind of a waste of time and money. Now I have to find ANOTHER decent rearend that fits a 2wd and redo it. Hopefully I can get the money out of the one I just refurbished to refurbish another. It's just a pisser that the parts guys at Advanced (I do have to say that they are usually on it) said the rears were the same along with a few others that I spoke to. When I measured things I measured spring mount to spring mount and NOT from rotor to rotor, so I guess the mistake falls on me. Lesson well learned. ![]() |
