popcorn popping sound?
Search has been done. Our 99 Blazer just began making this noise. It sounds like it may be exhaust related from it's location but it's very irregular in timing, pitch and volume. It just started last night. I'm thinking maybe catalytic converter. Anyone heard of this before?

Re: popcorn popping sound?
Update. This stopped the next day. About one week later, I got a SES light. Something with the EVAP system. I checked the gas cap but no change. I still have the light but the Blazer runs great. NOW, I have a hot/cold issue with the heat. I'm gonna check all the usual culprits with that today and poke around the vacuum lines, too. Next up is inspection, so my mechanic WILL find the things I don't even think of with no effort. He always does.

Re: popcorn popping sound?
is it coming from the exhaust tip?
if so, mines been doing the same for a few months, i took my cat off and had the muffler shop straightpipe it to a super turbo muffler, and after about a month it started making a popcorn popping noise from the exhaust, and it kept getting worse, right now at idle once it starts to warm up, it sounds like popcorn popping constantly, and im getting horible gas mileage, 14mpg city and 14.9 mpg highway, i have the 2.5l 1st gen 4cylinder and got 25-29mpg highway going 10mph faster than i do now ![]() i was told, its more than likely the cat converter, since i dont have one, its not getting back pressure=pop pop pop sound, just like a glasspack does, except mines not a POP, more of a burst of air, like when you make a PUP noise with ur mouth |
