new to these Trucks can someone "school me"

Im looking at picking up a 99 Gmc Jimmy. 88k miles on it and its 4x4. Picking it up for a fairly decent price.. Just wondering if I look for a new motor what years can I look at? its a 4.3. seen a few around on ebay and what not.. but not sure on how universal these motors are. thanks for any help.. and what is the difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen... sorry if im in the wrong gen.. but after reading some of the post i think im in the right place..
