New Here, just wnated to say hi .

hey guys, i just joined up and im the proud owner of a 96 GMC jimmy. I just bought it today off the chrysler dealership i work at, after taxes and all, i paid a grand total of 128 dollars for it . the body is nice, with no rust and shiney black paint, dark tint and black leather interior.

It wouldnt start so i got it for 100 bucks plus taxes etc , put some gas in it and boosted the battery and she fired right up and ran good. Factory CD player doesnt work though

i dont know much about these vehicles and i havent had a chance to take a good look at it, all i know is driving it around the lot, something doesnt feel right in the front end, it wanders alot and feels like the steering colum goes tight then loose then tight then loose,, the alignment is off by a mile !! but i know the power steering works fine,

also there is a rattle under the truck which when i crawled under it, sounded like the catalytic convertor, i think it needs a tune up and some TLC to make it run perfect , probley needs a cat convertor as weell, i will have pics by tommorow but can anyone tell me what sort of fuel mileage these vehicles usually get ? and what probleys are common with these trucks ?

also , is there anything in the front suspension that can be blamed for the bad wander, the tight then loose feeling (almost feels like the tires are fighting each other for direction of the vehicle)

any help would be great , thanx guys

Re: New Here, just wnated to say hi .

Welcome to the site.

The first major maintenance on my 96 Jimmy when bought was the suspension. New ball joint, pit arm, idle arm, and rods. Add a front end alignment, drives straight as an arrow!! Look over my website site pictures.

Plan to replace the following: radiator (convert to green coolant), heater core (PIA), tranny (maybe you're lucky), fuel injection spider, lower intake gasket and front end suspension.

I had to replace the radiator, hoses and thermostat housing on my 2001 Blazer at about 120,000 miles. I blame it on DexCool. The heater core is a major pain to replace, but once you pull the dash, it is cake. You will know when it needs replacing. Antifreeze all in your passenger floor. Along with the idler arm, etc, you should look at the steering shaft. There is a joint on the shaft called a rag joint that eventually goes bad. That also causes the wondering. You get used to it after a while.

Heater cores are notorious for failing. You practically take out the dash to replace it. Convert to green coolant if the radiator or heater core fail.

The intake gasket is a poor design. Look at my website pictures. I installed a FelPro gasket. The stock gasket will eventually fail.

The FI has poppets. Over time they get clogged. Misfires codes, poor gas milage and performance are good indicators. The updated spider (2001, I think) has the fuel injectors at the end instead of inside the body. You get better throttle response.

hey chris nice to meet ya man, my name is brian, surprised to see a fellow windsorite, i gotta ask you, what sort of gas mileage do these things get, i have a 93 intrepid right now and with just purchasing a house, i cant afford to keep both cars, so my dad is telling me to sell the jimmy cause of rising gas prices but i am so confused and dont know what to do, what sort of mileage are you getting here with yours, i know gas is up near 1.33 a litre so can you tell me how much it takes to fill yours from dead empty to full, and how many kilometers you get from a tank, thanks buddy, maybe we will meet up one day.

Re: New Here, just wnated to say hi .

If you are concerned about mileage, def. get rid of the Jimmy. The 4.3 is basically a 350 with 2 cyls cut off so, plenty of power, but, REALLY hard on gas! Actually, my Jimmy, I only drive in the summer (its my summer toy) because of gas being so hard (I drive a G5 as my daily).
The irony of everything is that the reason the 4.3 came about is because back in the 80's when we were facing another gas crunch (give me those gas prices any day), GM needed a fuel efficient V6 so they lobbed 2 cyls off the the 350 to make the 262...now 20 years later, i wish I could lob 2 MORE cylanders off of it, lol!
You didnt pay much for it so I would sell it. I imagine you could get $1000 for it no problem...and then bring that $1000 to me and ill gladly sell you a economical car (btw, your intrepid is worth $750 if you come buy a new GM from me, lol....im sure Pinnacle would love that HA!)
