Re: Mystery modification!!
Stealth ram air intake for the 4.3!!
What ya think? I finished the installation today. I'm driving nearly 150 miles this afternoon. I should get a good feel on how it works. I hope to increase city MPG to 19+. The Jimmy averages 18.5 MPG since PCM programming. The snorkel costs $17.50 at a local performance shop. I had to buy some 3" hose clamps. Everything else was sitting in my garage. The black hose is actually race quality brake cooling hose. I used it on my 83 Chevy ram air intake too. |

Re: Mystery modification!!
I had an intake on a WAY dropped 91 Civic hatch Si thats filter was about 4" off the ground, with no skid or bottom plate. And never had a problem... Sold the car, it now has a b16a1 in it with the same intake setup driven as a DD and still no problems. Ive heard of people hydro-locking engines with intakes...But I guess I was lucky...

Re: Mystery modification!!
I love doubters.I have this on my 83
I've driven it in rain. It's carbed. Absolutely no problems. Who can complain with 18.5 MPG with 365+ horse power! Ram air works. Take a look a the filter housing. Wonder why GM enginers installed a box with the filter located at the top. Any moister (actual water droplets) will fall to the bottom. A small hole at the bottom will let the water drain out. As people complain about gas prices, why don't they do something about it. I'm not driving less. I'm making my vehicles more efficient. |

Re: Mystery modification!!
Looks like a good set-up! I only have one complaint.
When you hooked the hose to the airbox, it looks like you used the stock snorkel for an adapter. That snorkel necks down to only a 1.75" opening which is very restrictive. I did something similar (click here) but I took off the snorkel and ran 4" tubing into the airbox. Nice looking mod! |

Re: Mystery modification!!
I wanted to cut the original snorkel. However, clamping the hose was a problem. I do plan to look for a 3" option. A 3" snorkel replacement would take better advange of the setup. Next time I'm at homedepot, I'll try to find a nice 3" adaptor to fit.
At least the K&N filter will stay cleaner a little longer. I installed new oil cooler hoses a while back. Unfotunately they leak. The stock setup sucks. I need to find a better option. I'm happy with the air flow. I noticed the engine ran a little cooler too. |

Re: Mystery modification!!
I used 4" clothes dryer flex duct and cut out a hole in the airbox to fit the duct. After fitting the duct I caulked the joint with RTV. I think that between the friction fit and the RTV that the duct is not going to move.
I think that Home Depot has 3" hose connections in the dryer duct and vent supplies. Last edited by Yogi : 06-21-2008 at 04:19 PM. |
